A history society claims a former top secret munitions factory could fall to ruin without vital maintenance work. BBC News - Calls to maintain WWII weapons site at Rhydymwyn
Thats because 1. They were scared to use them because the gas could be dirceted back at them by wind. 2. It renderd the gased area desolate.
That wasn't my point, CPT Obvious. They required precious resources to make and store. The manufacture of the rounds was kept secret so that rules out a role as deterrence. There must have been some scenario they envisioned using them.
Great find. I knew the US had and used mustard munitions during WW2 for training. I was deployed to Indiantown Gap to establish med support for range control after mustard shells were found in a WW2-era impact zone. Nothing like a week of MOPP 4 during the summer! We found Garand clips, live rounds & spent casings and signs of camping in the area. Those guys had no clue how close they were to being gassed.
BBC - Rhydymwyn Valley Works: Lifting the lid on secret site War-time film explained to the public what was happening on the site..
Thanks for the heads up, Ray. The Rhydymwyn Valley works is only a 1 hour drive from where I live and is another one of those sites that has been on my 'places to visit' list for ages. Here are more photos of the site. Rhydymwyn Valley Works - North Wales - Oct 2010 - NorthWest Exploration Forum
Looking at some of the photos in the link i've posted, it appears that they are cleaning up the pathways around the site. But that will probably be as far as it goes. Like most WW2 sites it will most likely be left to crumble away and disappear in to the earth. It reminds me of RAF Croft near Warrington, Cheshire. Me and Pegasus visited this former WW2 facility a few months ago and the place was in a state of disrepair and neglect. I'll post photos of the place soon...
I read somewhere that the Germans bombed an allied port, I believe in Italy, sinking several ships. Survivors of those ships showed symptoms of mustard gas, and rumors of the Germans gassing them were rampant. As it turned out the mustard gas was part of the cargo the boats had been carrying. I found out the raid was on Bari Italy.
