Yesterday I recieved my monthly Leatherneck and Marine Corps Gazette Magazines. The cover story was about the upcoming HBO series "The Pacific". There was another story inside about Eugene Sledge, who's book, "With the Old Breed, at Peleilu and Okinawa", was part of the source material for the mini-series. It is one of the free articles this month and you can read it here: (be sure to scroll down the page)

"Sledgehammer" At War And At Peace I Leatherneck Magazine

I thought it was a pretty good way to tell the man's life.

Well I noticed down at the bottom of the main page there was some web content titled "Pacific Profiles" featuring John Basilone, Sid Phillips and Robert Leckie. Now the MCA website is notoriously slow so I went to YouTube and got the links. Here they are, they are informative and thought provoking. Please watch them, everyone should know about these men.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the links, the profiles you mentioned and a couple more talking with the actual Marine veterans are on-demand under the HBO service that I have (am I allowed to mention my service provider). I have read both the Leckie and Sledge books and looking forward to seeing this great story. I've read a lot about John Basilone, quite an incredible man and a hero for all to remember and respect.

I'm going to have to buy another copy of "With the old Breed". It's been a while and I want to reread it.

All four of these men are legendary. Basilone was incredible and his accomplishments stand tall today in the hallowed history of the USMC. There is a Highway named after him near Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, CA. Near the famous "Trestles" - the surfers will know of what I speak.
I believe there are several bridges and highways named after him in other parts of the country too, especially New Jersey.

Basilone meets the Mayor of NYC (Fiorello La Guardia, Mayor 1934-1945).
