    "The public spat between Greece and Germany over the issue of World War II reparations deepened Friday, when Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou backed up his deputy's earlier claims by saying that the issue was still "open."

    In a sign that the dispute resonates beyond political statements, a Greek consumer group called for a boycott of German goods, according to various news reports.

    Papandreou said doubts over whether Germany had fully compensated Greece for the occupation during the war would not be addressed while the debt-laden country struggled to find a solution to its deficit problems, the Associated Press reported.

    The comments come in the wake of Deputy Prime Minister Theodoros Pangalos' statement earlier in the week to the BBC World Service that Germany still owes Greece damages."

    Unbelievable!!!

    One can see that the Greeks are desperate when they make accusations like this;

    Problems you've created yourself are now, when things don't turn the way you expect, blamed on others...worse, on events over 60(!) years ago...
    So all that money they received from the EU over the years meant nothing?

    In extreme circumstances and under pressure, so it seems, old roots of discontent resurface far too easily!

    Nice links btw, JagdtigerI!

    It is a sign of pure desperation of a misserable government that failed several times to comply with the EU monetary regulations. Unfortunately they are for sure not going to be the last government to come up with that kind of requests towards Germany. And the backbone less German government will sooner or later push some Euros under the table.

    Maybe they could forward their requests to the Iranians (Persia) - oh well their Alexander might work against them. Hey, they could ask the Turks and Italians as well - and the British had some post war issues there too - right?

    Regards

    The fact that $80 million in payments was sent roughly 20 years after the war is something Greece should be happy about. In Canada it took WW2 internment victims nearly 50 years for meager compensation, some groups worldwide are still waiting for their own.

    As they can do very little to deny requests relating to the war, Germany is the easy target, because of the events of the Holocaust Germany can say very little good towards their war time past without someone misinterpreting it and the like. It's very unfortunate that they are in this position as many misconceptions run rampant and probably won't be corrected until post humous or very close to it). Would you rather take on countries like Britain, France, etc who are a harder nut to crack or a nation like Germany which has had a recent history of "blowing over" as stated in other posts?

    Did you hear? Those dang Germans started World War I too!

    When Germans bring their Euros on a holiday the Greeks don't spit on the money , so they really should mellow down on this

    They want to start a revolution right? Well I hope they won't recall their former monarch from...... Germany.... :D
