"Ask most Americans when World War II started, and they'll offer an incredulous “you've-got-to-be-kidding” look.

“Everyone knows it was Dec. 7, 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor,” most will say.

I shared that with one of our readers, Dylan from Calgary, the other day, and I got the anticipated response.

“That's the problem with you Yanks,” said the snowbird who spends part of the year in La Quinta. Somehow he managed to laugh and simultaneously roll his eyes."

    Thanks, Jon.

I remember speaking with someone who worked with a program affiliated with Veterans Affairs Canada and who also was with the Naval Cadets, and he related to me the problems he had trying to get a friend of his son's to understand that World War II began long before Pearl Harbour. It was around the time the movie Pearl Harbour came out, and the young boy insisted that the war didn't start until 1941 when the Americans became involved. Many young people have their perception of history shaped by what they see in movies and television programs, even to the detriment of their own country's history.

Now I just wish I could see the special section of the paper to read their stories!

I believe this is a good example of how/why the term "arrogant American" came into being. While I love my Country (there I said it out loud), the World does not always look at us as we see ourselves. And there are those here who tend to see others with predisposed judgement.

I think that it is a term that has been earned in some cases but disproved in others. The fact that the very loud American media is littered with hordes of idiots doesn't help much.

I couldn't of said it better myself "There are Those here who tend to see others with predisposed judgement." But this does not apply only to Americans other countries have played the role also through history.

See, I try to show the humble side of us Americans and someone blasts our cars! If I'd only kept my 69' Camero. No Ferrari but made me :).
