Hi! This is my first thread, and I was just wondering if anyone shares the same interest as me- THE BATTLE OF IWO JIMA!!! I have always been facinated with amphibious operations in WW2, but I just love finding out about the Japanese defence tactics. :gi::gi::gi::gi::gi::gi::ac_p51b::flag_USAcryingeagle Sorry, getting carried away with the smileys!!!

Iwo Jima was no walk in the Park for three Marine Corps Divisions, the conditions were atrocious. A Speak in the Pacific some state, 4.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. Iwo is the Japanese word for sulfur, the island was full of Yellow sulfuric mist constantly rises from cracks of earth, and distinctly smelled like rotten eggs.

Corps field officers saw the intelligence reports, and were shocked by how many guns were present on the island. Black dots representing coastal defense guns, fox holes, artillery emplacements, anti-tank guns, pillboxes. The American intelligence only detected the presence of 12,000 Japanese, which they would later quickly fined out they were incorrect.

In Iwo Jima the Japanese we`re commanded by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the defense of Iwo Jima was set up to inflict severe casualties on the Allied forces and discourage invasion. Each Japanese was expected to die in defense, taking 10 enemy soldiers in the process. Within Mount Suribachi, 750 defense positions were built to shelter artillery guns, small blockhouses or isolated forts surrounding the mountain and hospitals. Some had steel doors to protect the artillery pieces inside, and nearly all of them were connected by a total of 13,000 yards of tunnels. On Mount Suribachi alone there were 1,000 cave entrances and pill boxes. Within them, 21,000 men awaited the US.

When you post information from another resource you should cite that source. Your original post did not contain references for the commentary you provided; only the sources of the pictures.

If you paraphrase commentary or "cut and paste" commentary you need to cite that reference as well.

The Iwo Jima photographs by Marine photographer Douglas Page that you incorporated in your previous post were some of the best combat photos I have seen -- very gritty and looked just like it was. I have never seen them before. Thanks for posting them

I'm sending the one on Hill 382 to my very best Iwo Jima buddy, who was badly wounded on Hill 382. We still meet about twice a year. Never talk about the war.

I hope your new thread prospers.

VCS-WW2 thanks my pleasure. Many of the Pictures I never seen them also, yes indeed very gritty gives you a perspective what they had to endure.
That's a know fact those that have served and witnessed the carnage never really talk about it, nor do they glorify it, just content they survived the Madness.
