One thing to keep in mind is that this is a a right wing political party taking advantage of/using the veterans to further their own agenda. Why are the veterans "falling into place"? What conditions prevailed? etc.

Tolerancy ? Hell no...Thats an official gouvernment approving Nazism however one looks at it ..people can walk without pointing out their SS heroics too .. everybody openly wearing nazi emblems should have been arrested and thats the only message any sane gouvernment is supposed to give to its people .
Bah ..no gouvernment should ever approve of official nazism in times like this with all the backview of today ..its like their whole country taking a leak over WW2 heritage t because they didnt get along with Russians ..when looking at this Iam beginning to understand why the Russians didnt like them ...no shame and no regrets

    Heinrich,

You missed the point, as long as they are not war criminals then there is reason for them to prosecuted. Should we label the man an SS Genocidal Jew killing man just because he was told he if didn't do his job his family would be sent to concentration camps? I don't think so. Obviously this was not always the case but it proves a point that not every SS member is a Nazi.

As for the SS marching in Australia, sure there would be a big up roar about it, as for most people in the world they only know the part facts, which is that they believe every SS was a Nazi and in fact every German was a Nazi, but as long as there was no SS gloyifing and only stating the fact that these men fought and died for there country there will be only minimal problems.

The Japanese and Australian Governments have made huge steps to increase the political views and the views of the people to each country. The Australians no longer view the Japanese in that light as they did in ww2, in fact most Japanese are so effected by the whole situation in ww2 and the fact that the Japanese government did a massive campaign to increase relations and knowledge of the incidents of ww2. I was worked with a Japanese lady and we talked about the war once and the Anzac POW's and their treatment and she apologised to me for what her country and its soldiers did in ww2.

So if the Japanese Guards did a march through any Australian City in memory of there serve to there emperor then it would as a whole be viewed with respect, however if they start boasting about what they they did in the camps then that is another thing.

I think the 7th Panzer Division is also another one which didn't commit war crimes, the Panzer units were S.S. right?

For sure, the Tartars, The Cossacks, the Baltic states hated Communism and took a chance to fight against it. Cost 'em dear later......

So did individuals from countless other occupied countries, Norway, Denmark, France, Belgium & The Netherlands. At the end, the foreign fighters fought like tigers in Berlin, they got no quarter from the Soviets. They had to fight, they couldn't go home. Those that did escape either stayed in Germany or fled to Spain & South America. One was hanged at Wandsworth prison London. An English traitor.

If you choose to believe that any any SS Div was 'Whiter than white' that's your choice. If you allow a distaste for Stalin to cloud your view of what went on with these groups, that also is your call.

I have been to Oradour Sur Glane. I'm prepared to believe that British and US troops did, on occasions commit 'War Crimes' but compared to SS Units..........?? I can't recall any SS man openly stating his unit committed a war crime. It was always 'Someone else'.

I can understand pride in having been Wehrmacht, Afrika Korps, Navy, Luftwaffe..............you won't ever convince me that the SS fit into that catagory. Not Ever!

They're not spitting on anybody, did the Latvian government make some sort of snide statment about them glorifying the SS? Not that ive seen. What they are doing is letting the men who represented their countries hate for Soviet oppression let everybody know that they are proud that they did what all Latvians wanted to do for awhile, attempt overthrow the Russian influence and control!

If you are going to go on about that they participated in killings of minorities, show me that Dutch SS and French SS and all the other volunteers were so much better then they were.

This march is not a big deal as the Baltic SS largely stood for something much different then what the Germans did!

Rommel commanded the 7th Panzer division, it was called "Ghost" by many for its efficiency.

That aside, I'm not saying the S.S. wasn't a criminal organization and I doubt anyone else is saying that either. What I was asking is what do you do with those who have clean hands or have attempted to make right since the war ended? They they be treated the same way as those who actually did do something wrong?

Some of the veterans might be using it as a time to commemorate their fallen comrades but political parties are using it for more than that. Perhaps some of the veterans are also aligning themselves willingly with the parties.

This is a good observation, does hold some water. Like a Political Party would never take advantage to further their own Agenda.

It's also to be noted that many had been forced to fight.

I believe there are too many generalizations about the Waffen SS. Every army had/has bad people. I'm not trying to justify what some of them did but I will not generalize and consider all of them evil like many have.

Naah its not ..its an absurd statement really ...maybe NAZI lobby hijacks are very common in Canada but ehm ..we don't consider that a likely scenario unless their country as a whole is behind the NAZI ideology.
If people dont see anything wrong in that than they missed the biggest point of whole ww2 ..

btw marches are banned by Latvian gouvernement according to this :
    http://english.ruvr.ru/2010/03/15/5306530.html

Bans are for a 'safety threat '

The Nazi's didn't have an entire country behind them persay as say someone would say if a legitimate election occured where a party won majority vote. The Nazi's used intimidation, fear, etc to gain power, at that point people were basically stuck with them.

I'd give you my last salute, but I've run out...

Enough though, the apologists rein here. The forum has ceased to be a factual historical meeting point. Those in command here seem to be riddled with the same views. A great forum bites the dust.

Banned dont worry no need to ban...Some moderators need to evaluate not only their view of history but their knowledge of ww2 in general. Pity.
