I just logged on, composed what I might flatter myself to call a fairly insightful and comprehensive post, only to be told that I needed to log on and refresh. My work was totally wasted. Wondering why I should bother?
Well I got a llttle tip that will do wonders... here is what I do before sending off any message or post... After you finish writting your message/post, before you click send, in the message screen, right click "select all". your message will be highlighted. right click again on screen to "copy". If you get timed out. it's okey. Log back in back to where you were and on the message screen , right click "paste" and your message will reappear. send your message out it happened to me all the time before. I took too long to write something, so this little technique will keep you from cursing out at the computer. I do it all the time now in case for some reason the message does not go through.. Hope this will help in future posts. but you should get back to your message again, we're interested in what you like to say Happy posting.
well for whatever reason your message doesn't get though in any website or email, using this techinque will help preserve your message in case it gets lost. just repost your copied message.
The same thing used to happen to me all the time. Try clicking on the "remember me" next time you log in (only if on a personal computer). At least then if you time out it will log you back in and post your message.
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I'll be reposting on the current Bismarck thread, hopefully worth the trouble!
I stopped having the timeout problem once I learned the trick Mike mentioned! Before that, I used to lose many a well written post, although it also used to be handy when I'd written something in emotional reaction! Another trick someone suggested to me was that when you expect to write a long response open Word or similar and then copy & paste when you are ready to post on the thread. Good luck. As you can see by the thousands of posts on the Forum - most of think it is worth any bother.
When you log on, make certain that you have the box "Keep logged on" checked, or otherwise your session will time out, if you stay on a page too long, such as when typing a long message. As insurance, when I type something long, I highlight it and hit Ctrl-C to save it just in case there is a glitch. Then, all I have to do his start the message over and hit Ctrl-V to replace it in full.
Exactly as Slipdigit said, just a word of caution though. if you are using a public computer, be sure to LOG OUT before you leave it There are many parasites in this world lurking around for a new host. Though the mods and admins have another layer of protection, us common guys dont have it. Regards, TBA
Sometimes these time-out things are also the result of browser settings at the user end, or even the way a given ISP handles the connection. Very often something to do with exceptionally high security settings on the browser if the 'remember me' box doesn't fix it. But I'm not going to advise anyone fiddle with their security settings - that's very much a personal choice. Jeff's advice on quickly copying really long posts, just in case, is the soundest belt & braces insurance... that is unless the entire bleedin' browser crashes, as they seem to like doing at the most annoying moments . ~A
