Quick introduction: I'm a USN Vietnam Vet, architectural historian and avocational WW2 historian, WW2 re-enactor, secretary of a successful ship-model company, and all-around nice guy (according to my wife, anyway). My interest in WW2 stemmed mainly from my uncle (actually, first cousin once-removed) who was at Pearl Harbor during the attack, serving in USS Selfridge (DD-357). He stayed in Selfridge through the Solomons campaign and was aboard her when she was torpedoed at the Battle of Vella Lavella. He was part of the salvage crew who went back aboard her after she was abandoned. After getting her back to Mare Island, he was transferred to USS St. George (AV-17) and was aboard her when she was kamikazed at Kerama Retto during the Okinawa campaign. Had another uncle who served in Shermans with Patton's 3rd Army, but never really knew him and never got to talk with him about his experiences. Anyway, that's it in a nutshell. Looking forward to getting involved in the threads.
Weclome Aboard! Go ahead stow your gear....Up and forward starboard , down and aft port, make yourself comfortable. Damage control crews are working throughout the forum so uniform of the day is working blues. Please feel free to wander about and get a feel for the "old girl" and don't mind the mess.
You'll find me in the Captain's Office as Captain's Yeoman--and don't nobody mess with the Captain's Yeoman more than once! Don't look for me on working parties--I'll be taking pics of them in my collateral duty as Ship's Photographer. And if your compartment ain't clean, I'll be the one taking the notes during inspections.... Oh, and I don't stand watches, either. Given the hours that the XO keeps me working, I don't have time for watches! Captain's Yeoman, USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25), 1966-70. Charter member, Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club, 1966-7, 1969.
Hey, Formerjughead, I note you're in Chico. I'm a Sacramento native myself. Was up in your neck of the woods a bit when I still worked for Caltrans.
Welcome John good to have you on this forum, have noted your postings on hyperscale -ship link over the years.... E ~
Welcome aboard John. Interesting background on both you and your uncle. Glad you found us. We look forward to your input.
Bought a shovel from a Cal-Trans guy that was retiring. It was the shovel he had used daily for the last 20 years......still had the price tag on it
Welcome and to you and all others of your "era", Thank You ! Had a Cousin in sub's, one on the ground and an Uncle flying small transports (C-47) during Vietnam.
You know why the pockets on Caltrans safety vests are sewn on upside-down? So the maintenance guys can lean on their shovels no-hands....
Welcome John, good to have you lurking about. I see the Marine Det has been in contact with you. Feel free to post pics of your relatives and your models. Also, extend to your relatives who served in the PTO, my sincere thanks. Finally, thank you for your Vietnam service. It does not go unappreciated by me.
Hello John, and welcome to this fine forum. I would like to reiterate Slip's sentiments and thank you for your service to our country as well as that of your relatives before you. I would be greatly interested in anything you could add about the Selfridge at Vella Lavella. http://www.ww2f.com/war-pacific/24046-naval-battle-vella-lavella-october-1943-a.html
