Does anyone have knowledge of Civil War swords? I saw one yesterday, (no scabbard) and I'm not sure as to it's value. I did not examine it closely but I may go back and take another look. Web searches reveal it to be a Calvary sword, loop style hand guard, approx. length 40-42". Any help-suggestion would be appreciated. Forgot to mention: priced under $400.00
If I am not too late, do you have any photos of it? Pay real close attention to the makers mark if there is one. War Between the States swords and sabres have been faked for years.
Thanks 36thva2, I've been told just what you've stated. I decided there are other things I need to concentrate on now. The Antique store is a place we 'visit' once or twice a year (long drive). I may take a closer look the next time we go now that I have a better idea of what to look for.
Hi Biak, I know a little about Civil War swords-based on the collection that the CC Museum of Science and History had when I was volunteering there. 36th VA is correct, they are VERY heavily faked-like the Confederate "Dog River" Swords for example. I saw a nice Confederate fighting knife on display at Camp Mabry Museum just today.
A real good place to look for info on swords is The Civil War Relicman Harry knows his stuff. Carl is right, Confederate swords are faked all the time. Even the common Ames yankee swords have been faked.
Thanks Guys, I took Carl's advice earlier and did a lot of Googling but I don't remember if I hit on the site you provided 36thva2. I've 'bookmarked' it.
Hi Biak, especially on these-remember the rule-if its too good to be true? it most likely is-especially where Civil War swords are concerned. The museum eve had a few I thought were "bad" swords-all Union Army.
