Can someone clarify what a Statistical Control Unit was in WWII? I have heard conflicting information about its duties.

I saw one site that indicated that SCUs had been called Machine Reports Units prior to redesignation.

    Steve,

Machine Records units are briefly described in Report of the General Board No. 30. See Report No. 46 for more complete coverage.

Report No. 30 can be found online at http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/ You will have to search their digital collection for it.

Report No. 46 is, to my knowledge, not available on line.

    Hope this helps.

My father was in the 28th SCU, 15th Air Force. According to their 1st anniversary history from November 1944:
"It has been said that Statistical Control is the application of the best technical methods of U.S. big business to aerial warfare" It was an "extremely comprehensive reporting system" ... "through the medium of four standard statisitical reports containing detailed information on combat operations, aircraft status and accountability, combat crew usage and requirements, and personnel strength." Apparently they were also consolidators of reports from the various combat units.

    Hope this helps.
