Howdee folks, as you can see this is my first post, I hope you all will not hold it against me. I have lost the history of my mothers side of the family. This was my great grandparents and the young one was my Ommi, Annalisa. I think I was told that the photo was taken in 1938 or 1939 and he retired before the hostilities started in Europe. I am afraid that I don't know his name, I would like to know his rank and if his uniform tells any info of when, where, what rank, etc. Thanks in advance for the help. I sure wish this info was given to me before it was lost--sad but I hope to find out more about this man. I know he served in the great war as a calvery man-- I have two small unit flags from his outfit. ( that is for another post and forum probably). I also know my grandfather was also in the German forces but that is about the size of that- He left my grandmother high and dry (and drunk) after the five kids were born. It was taboo to speak of the war in the family so pretty much all of the history went with them to the grave. Thanks for reading the rant.

    Hello jjb22,
I can't help you as I have no idea, but wanted to compliment you on the photograph. I'm sure you will get answers about the uniform and insignia. There are some very knowledgeable people on this site and I doubt it will take too long. Welcome.

Hi Jjb22. The man is wearing a regular Wehrmacht uniform, and considering there are no decorations or special details it is hard to say where he came from. Te WWI flags could tell us where you ancestors came from. WWI units were regional so by seeing a flag we could find out.

I doubt this 1938-39 picture would be useful on a WWI forum though, maybe the flags, but many here can identify those too.
