They don't need to do that yet, the two remaining examples of Communism at its most extreme are still functioning (sort of). Cuba and North Korea. The Chinese Communists don't count, they are no more Communist in reality than the Ming dynasty was.
Clint I think I would agree but also Russia still has an underlying tone just ready to come out give it time do think it will return, though many say it will never happen
So you think Russia will be communist again? Some say the Cold War never ended, and Russia is just hibernating, after all they still have lots of weapons, I guess it is possible given the right conditions.
The museum is most certainly open, the "Naziland" moniker is a media piece. It isn't called that openly by any stretch, and the Himmler SS connection isn't the sole reason for the castle to be reopened, they only used it for a few years. The rest of its history is the supposed to be the main draw.
Good example of modern Germany confronting it's past square in the face. Censorship will lead only to further mythology, rather than understanding and acceptance. Only by education in this manner can we avoid a repeat performance.
Don't joke! I remember posting a story a few years back that some enterprising East German firm was conducting walking tours of the old Iron Curtain.
I just read that there are certain sections of the "Berlin Wall" which have been "recreated" so that tourists can oggle at them.
As for the loss of the Russian empire, the Russian people probably feel it was a 'stab in the back', as many Germans did between the wars. It may take an occupation a'la Germany in 1945 before this particular aspect of the Russian character can be silenced for good. And what was that about Cuba and North Korea? Still functioning? The Cuban Revolution is a tired anachronism, whilst N.Korea suffers from another sordid cult of personality. Socialism is well and truly consigned to the status of an 'also ran' in the field of governing models. It was just a utopian ideal for intellectuals with no concept of practical applications, and/or human nature. Marx and Engels were pissing into the wind. Their writings were turgid and verbose. Populations have already consigned Socialism to the dustbin of history. Russians with rose tinted glasses for it are victims of their own misguided nostalgia. If it takes another 'hot' war to finally put this mal-apropriate intellectualism to rest for good, then so be it. Glad it's not me that has to run off and fight it. Pity for our kids, though. Enough people have already sacrificed themselves on this particular altar for my tastes. Better to hit modern socialism intellectually, and discredit it as unworkable without eliminating basic human traits such as greed, envy, exploitation etc.
Gordon It wasn't a joke. how sad and true that after 60 plus years the worlds youth and through upbringing tends to forget history but alas history repeats itself
Russians felt stabbed in the back for saying goodbye to a system where the rich got richer and the poor got leagues poorer? The post itself is over sensationalized to the max!
Um...modern democratic capitalism isn't much better Mehar...we have a noted case of a "widening gap between rich and poor" all over the democratic world. It is the Russians themselves that need to change their attitude to their own past. I personally believe Stalinism was the very worst regime in Europe, worse than Hitler's Germany. Many modern Russian somehow disagree strongly with this. There is even a modern movement to resurrect the cult of personality surrounding Stalin himself, as evidenced by recent Russian moves to declare Stalin a "War Hero", with large posters, speeches, much clapping of hands. I think he was a butcher, but modern Russians look back to jobs for life, free health care, subsidized rent etc, then look back further to the GPW and credit Stalin's regime with saving Russia from disappearing from the map altogether. Brings a vodka induced tear to the eye, does'nt it?
so the question remains, who will visit Himmler's castle? this is just my opinion... please don't take this seriously... it's one thing to visit an exebition, but himmler's castle? Something a little eerie about that. I realize history cannot be forgotten, but I think the castle opens the doors for the neo-nazis to have a place to worship. i support educating history and axis exebitions but I'm not really sure that it's the best location to do it. it's good that the Germans are confronting their past, but with the rise of national socalism and radicalism in europe, it may not be the best place to do so. Himmler himself purposely made the castle into a nazi worshiping ground. So why have a museum there? Why not somewhere else? Himmler's "crypt" used for the eternal flame to nazism. more pictures of "naziland" here: Museum dubbed 'Naziland' opens at Heinrich Himmler's Wewelsburg Castle | Mail Online
'Despite the criticism, German authorities now intend to open more exhibitions about the Nazi regime - including a museum in Berlin dedicated to the Gestapo secret police on the site of its former headquarters.' That's nice.
Yes but for the first few years (mostly under Lenin) the Russia people have recieved far better than they did under the previous system for decades. During the war Stalin was a figure millions of Russias looked to for hope, when the cities were being bombed it would be Stalin and the Red Army who would come in to save the day. Now of course Stalin wasn't riding in on a horse to the frontlines during the war but who was at the time? Kings, Queens, and leaders hadn't fought alongside their people since World War I for a variety of reasons. I don't see anything wrong with visiting the castle if it is indeed for historic purposes and not to ritualize Himmler, the S.S., etc. I'm sure security would be present at the castle so it would be pretty easy to spot those trying to idolize Himmler's foot path and those who are legitimately viewing the exhibit. Also, what would be stopping the Neo Nazi's from doing worse before than when the castle was not turned into a museum and more removed from the public eye?
Actually............display of nazi items is allowed in Germany. I know because I visited many places that had flags and other stuff openly displayed. One such place happened to be at the Marine Memorial in Laboe, on Laboe Beach itself, at the Uboat Archiv in Altenbruch/Cuxhaven, at the Uboat Memorial in Moltenort as well as in Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Meersburg, and in a few other places.
It will be interesting to see how it gets on. If it begins to be a "Church of the Nazarine" for neo-nazi's, I can see it get shuttered.
