Klaus Barbie joined the SD (Sicherheitsdienst) in 1935, earning the nickname "Butcher of Lyon" as a head of Lyon area Gestapo. Simone Lagrange recalls: "He was caressing the cat. And me, a kid 13 years old, I could not imagine that he could be evil... I was tortured by him for 8 days." Ennat Leger: "He broke my teeth... put a bottle in my mouth and pushed it until the lips split." Barbie was awarded, by Hitler himself, the First Class Iron Cross with Swords. After the war, Klaus Barbie was recruited by the Western Allies because of his "police skills". With the help of the Americans, he escaped to South America in 1950.

Only reason I posted this was because I'm hoping someone will post a photo of the "First Class Iron Cross with Swords"

Barbie was recruited as an agent of the US Counterintelligence Corps, with their full knowledge of who he was.

Madame Lagrange, who the OP mentioned, is one of many people interviewed in the documentary "Hotel Terminus - The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie", the 1988 winner of the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary.

Weighing in at 4 hours and 30 minutes this documentary paints an amazing picture of not only post-war Europe but the thugs the victors had to work with, all in the name of defeating communism.
