Howdy, My Name's Steve, Living in Melbourne Australia, originally from Lancashire, UK. I've always been interested in WW2, especially as both grandfathers were involved. One manufacturing Lancaster Bombers, the other a Captain in the Army. It was only recently we have discovered parts of what my Grandfather, Captain David McFarlane, went through. We knew he was involved at the end of the war in Malaya. I also think he served in North Africa? on the 6th Sept 1945 my grandfather led a team to help recover Sybil Kathigasu who was held as a POW in Malaya. Sybil was treated terribly at the hands of the japanese and died in 1948 from the wounds she sustained. It is interesting searching the web and finding reference to my Grandfather on at least one site. So now its time to see where this new information takes us in our journey to discover more about his live during WWII. We are about to request his service records. We believe he was in the Royal Horse Artillery, although our understanding that no royal horse artillery served in Malaya during the war? I also have his service number, but unfortunately, that and the story of Malaya and the discovery he helped recover POW's was all we knew. Sybil Kathigasu wrote her book, No Dram of Mercy, post war.
