This is the way it should be. I don't see any of us having the authority to change what is historical record. I try not to use offensive words about other people, but to alter the text of a document that is part of the public record is academic dishonesty of the first order. Sanitizing the past does no one any favors. I hope you told the guy to screw off and learn real history.
I am offended by these multitudes of people who are easily offended.... Can we wipe them from the record and start again? I am offended by political correctness as a concept. Can we remove this then, for the record? I swear to spend the rest of my life fighting this disease. It's turning everyone into thin-skinned idiots, 'offended' at every turn of the page. No wonder our war against terrorism is going so badly, we don't have the 'moxie' to bring it to a conclusion anymore. We just 'chuff' around the edges, whilst our lazy and ill-educated youth scream 'ewwwww!" at a picture. They would BARF in reality. Today's generation couldn't fight something like WW2. The way things are going, we, as westerners, DESERVE TO LOSE the next hot war, and have some other society take our place.
V.B., I used to have fun with the PCers at Purdue. I took a class on Russian cinema (had to, but it was fun away.) The prof. had done part of his graduate work at Moscow University. There were seat available for Americans because the "third world" countries had stopped sending people there. He shared this information willing, unaware that it made him look like a loser. Anyway, as we're going around the room at "say something about yourself" time I decided to have some fun. "Hi, my name is (bleep) and while I'm not a communist, I did have a job killing them when I was younger."
(bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep)ing FCC, taking all the "inappropriate" and "insulting" material out of our lives. Even if it's historical. Sure, it may be a little racist or whatever sometimes, but COME ON!!! Who comes up with the idea of "inappropriate material" in the first place? Please watch this informational video on the FCC:YouTube - Family Guy - The Freaking FCC. Anyway, this ain't right. If we have to change anything historical to meet the standards of being politically correct and appropriate, then there is the largest consequnce that may cause the downfall of the entire human understanding of history: being historically incorrect. That is the only thing worse than being "inappropriate" in historical context. They want to play hardball with history, then someone is going to get hurt. If they censor historical context, then sooner or later they're going to get more complaints than the worst television show of all time.
I agree with a lot of stuff in thi thread and ran out of salutes and such but ill say that I FULY support Op in NOT being politically correct. Im not a PC type of guy and I would have told anyone demanding a change of a term to go F___ themselves. I dont hear anyone complaining about Germans being called Krauts-Jerries-Huns etc and it pisses me off when the term nazi-is used, loosely and also as a blanket term. Also, the use of the term "racist" has gone way out of hand. Sheep Dip, ive been called racist by a stupid low level Wal Mart manager at a WM in Houston-bev=cause of an incident I had there one time when I stood there trying for 45 minutes and asking help from no less than 5 employees-to find a product I knew they carried but I couldnt find. Of those five employees-not a one of them spoke any English and all I got were sily shoulder shrougs and hand signals and them claiming to not understand what I wanted. I got peeved, went to the Electronice Dept and made an older guy who barey spoke or understood any English - which haoppens to be the language our Country was founded using-ant NOT spanish, japanese, vietnamese, russian, german or any othefragging language-just English-and like our religions were Judeo-Christian-and not other. Anyway, back to the WM story and being called a racist because of this comment I made when i FINALLY got to see one form of a low-level manager by the name of sharon-whom I felt like punching in the mouth after it mouthed off to me. Anyway, after waiting an approximate additional 30 minuts for sharon to show up, I was pretty friking ticked off. The first words out of that witches mouth were: "You look angry about something-what happened?" I explained that not only did I wait for 45 minute going to five employees and not getting any help or none of them even trying to find someone to help me out-that I went to the Electronic Dept to get a guy to call for a manager." sharon then ased what I had been looking for and I told sharn what I wanted and that I had asked those five employees for help finding the product and that (and here is what I said that gor sharon to call me a racist) not one of those five eployees spoke or understood any English and I then said, i it a WM policy to now only hire people who dont understand or speak any english? Then sharon said: "Thats a racist statement and I dont have to hear it. I then said your going to hear what I have to say even if i hav eto follow you into the employees lounge or whereever youdr going and then if im not satisified or given any help by you to solve me probkem, I will turn you into thwe Area Manager-Which I wound up doing the next day when I told him what happened. The area manager fully supported me and also stated that after hearing exactly what I told sharon, that my comment was NOT a racist comment and that he would see to it tha sharon was corrected. Basically, that witch tried to call my bluff, and lost. Anyway, my poin to this WM story is to further back up OP about not bowiing to the pc croud. Political Correctness is not only a sickness, but a full blown disease. PS, as its my heritage and also the way I was raised-I do get slightly offended when someone calls me a Yank-but that is because of how I was raised. Though our family is related to US Grant in some way, i'd rather much be related to General Robert Edward Lee. )
Ah, gracias ;-)) I just ordered two tshirts to be made using some of my images on them. I can hardly wait to see what reactions I will get :-D
Op, thats a new one on me-and for the corrections on my(our) German, is another reason why we need Andy here ;-)) My shirts should be in within the end of the month so im looking forward to being controversial-especially to those ruined politically correct College Students at U.T.
"Makes nothing", or properly, "No problem, dude!" (And my German, like my other languages, comes most from longshoremen, so I could be saying any damn thing.) We'll be waiting for pix.
I have a Stars and bars bandana I wear when I'm on my Harley, my jacket has the old Georgia flag on it as well as a huge 'Savannah Chapter' HOG rocker on the back and small rockers from Biloxi, Mobile, Manassas, Nacgadoches, Panther Creek, Macon, Charleston, Talahassee, Richmond, Montgomery, Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro & New Orleans plus a coupla of Stars and bars patches, a Texas patch and my number plate has 'Sweet Home Alabama' on it plus the Stars and bars and the Alabama state flag.........................and the S***e I get.............................I've been called all kinds of stuff. You'd think I had a white pointy helmet...................
Heh heh, It Doesnt Matter-works for me. The slang version of that saying is: Macky Nicky. Oh and, the two t-shirts im having images made on-will include Charlton Heston (yes the former NRA Pres and great Acivist Actor) as Judah Ben Hur-in a scene where he was rowing on oar inside a Roman Galley of War. The other image will be one with James Coburn as Sergeant Steiner. Those two images ought to tick off a few punks
As they say (rather as I admit to) that Mein Deutsch ist veri schlecht. When I was in Germany and tried to speak some German to some of them, they were all too polite by asking me to speak English to them so that they could learn it more. ;-)) They did appreciate me trying though. Pix may be awhile coming. Just depends when TA and I can get together to go someplace. We visited the Camp Mabry Museum last week and I do have several pics but in emails sent and I have no idea how to get them posted. Pics are of a Sherman, a Stuart, and I think of an Iraqi tank? However, when we get together again, I will be wearing one of those t-shirts. Most likely the Heston one-but who knows? :-D
Ill fess up to something. When I was a Correctional Officer for the State of Texas, I wore a windbreaker all the time as it was a way to protect you a bit from the sun. Anyway, on my windbreaker-I wore two Iron Cross 2nd class-one from 1914-and a 1939. Nobody there knew exactly what I had and I was permitted by all my supes to wear them. I wore them only because it kept my mind off some of the daily crap that we COs have to put up with. I also word two 4-place Imperial German Ribbon bars on my shirt. The friends I had that worked there knew it was only militaria but we told any inquiring inmates that each ribbon was for something I achieved and was recognized for. Doing the wearing of this stuff was one of my ways of having a bit of levity at work which never created any problems. I was toying with the idea of buying one of those more expensive and bigger Mopeds. If/when I do, I do plan on wearing a genuine WWII lid-either my Dads steel pot or a German steel pot. Im leaning towards a restored German lid-which HAS o be an M-35-I dont like the M-42 and can barly stand the M-40. Anyway, I hate those that are sold at Harley dealerships because even faraway they look like __it. Oh and one more thing. I was allowed by the Major of the first unit and 2nd unit I worked at-to carry my own firearms when I was assigned Perimeter Picket Duty. I loved it because I got to wear my Walther p-38 on my hip and I did bring my Mauser Sniper Rifle variant-to work a few times ;-))
Be PROUD Mr.Evans.... Ordinary Germans were enacting elected government policies. The common man has no reason to be ashamed. Only the leaders that put them in the situation.
For me it's not a matter of political correctness (I'm opposed to that). It's a matter of respect. We have had two Japanese exchange students in our home and they were lovely people. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad the the Allies won the war (I have relatives who served during WWII in Europe). And I'm opposed to tampering with historical document because they may offend someone. But in our modern dialog with people, we need to show respect. That's my 2 cents worth.
I try to polite to people now, but I'm up to my ears in then on any given day. I have seven volumes of speeches from '39-'45 on my desk, and they range from "PC" to outright racist. I would never, ever, "correct" anything those people said then, because the document would be moved to now, rendering it useless for historical purposes.
Quite true my friend. the bad thing is is that Austin is mostly Liberal and I have an uuphill battle none the less. The UT croud is the worst of the lot. You got as new star I might add ;-))
