Did Buck shoot those German pows whom he gave cigarettes to? This was never answered in the series but did he ever give a answer to this mystery?

Actually it was Ronald Speirs, not Buck Compton, who was rumored to have shot POWs.

According to Winters book, Speirs did shoot a squad leader that didn't follow orders and may have shot POWs. There was never any official investigation into the allegations due to Speirs' outstanding record as a combat leader.

I was in the audience when Don Malarkey was asked this question. He said (I'll paraphrase) that HBO got it wrong. The first part of that scene when Malarkey meets a German POW who lived and worked in Oregon, close to where Malarkey lived/worked was true. The second part where Speirs shoots the POWs within ear shot of Malarkey is not true. However, Malarkey added that Speirs did shoot German POWs in the marshes outside Carentan. Malarkey said that was true.
