My grandfather landed on Normandy on June 8, however one thing I have been curious about is what kind of vessel he came in on. As I said earlier he was a jeep driver, so I am assumiong that it might of been the following, but if not what else can it be.

Also were can I possibly find info about ship numbers I would love to narrow it down if I can to the ship or in the ballpark of the ship he may of been on

It could have been any of a number of types depending upon what unit he was in and what type vessel he was transported on. The vessel in the picture is an LST (Landing Ship Tank) he could very well have landed in one of these. It is more likely he was landed from an APA (I don't think any AKA's participated in the Normandy landings but I'm not 100% sure) in an LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle/Personnel) or LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized). He could have even made the cross channel crossing in an LCT (Landing Craft Tank). You can find info on most of these ships in the US Navy Online Web-site.

Here's the APA Samuel Chase that participated in the Normandy landings.

Thanks for the info it is a starting point. my grandfatehr was with the 4th Cavalry Group. From what I know they landed on Utah Beach, but for some reason (weather or human error). They were actually heading to Omaha, I believe they landed during the day. I know his ship was the only one that did not suffer any water damage to the vehicles. With that I can narrow it down, because it had to of carried the jeep he was issued to drive, but the information helps. If you have anymore I would appreciate it.

    Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!

LCM or LCT why because of size and the landing properties getting close enough and as you said the proper fitting and useage of jeeps off-shore but close enough not to flounder, strongly opinioned it was the last pic involved - LCT
