    Hey all,

Recently been following the developments in Korea. With the sinking of the South Korean vessel by North Korean torpedo, tensions have been mounting. I know these things have happened in the past between the two countries with South Korea sinkin NK vessels and such. But with the vow of retaliation by South Korea, and the North Korean response that it would result in all out war, i started thinking.. is this war imminent??

It's hard to tell, Korea has always been a "powder keg" of sorts that threatened to go off every now and then. Obviously I hope it doesn't come to a war.

I know China has said they are staying out of a war if it ever occurs but has Russia said anything? They're still trade partners with North Korea right?

I think and hope that the PRC will give the chain a tug from time to time.

I very much doubt they want a war either.

Found this documentary again after a long time, worth a watch and gives some insight into what the war meant for Korea.

I wonder what would happen if Japan sunk a Chinese ship full of men. Heard China was not willing to acknowledge N Korea sank anything. See no evil.

Yes it is, it was never a matter of time, rather a time of when. I sincerely hope that we wont be involved again when it does.

China just doesn't want to get involved at all now which is good for the rest of the world in-case things go back to war.

I pray another war does not start but I point out how the despot, the dictator, rules and gets the attention of his people away from the failures of his actions. He must find or create an enemy that can be relegated to such a dangerous position that the everyday citizen has greater fear that is deeper than the hunger and pain he is currently experiencing. I think the ruler of North Korea has had to do this repeatedly as his silence might allow the citizen of the north to compare himself to the citizen of South Korea and the extreme differences in their economic fortunes.

North Korea has pulled off some very audacious (or dumb) moves but I don't think they will start a war. If they do all their leverage goes away and quickly. If they use nukes they aren't going to have any friends and you can bet anything that looks like it's at all related to their nuclear program has a big target painted on it. They may try bluffing right up to the edge but I don't think they will willingly step over. I dubt the South Koreans will either. Unfortunatly accidents do happen so I'm still rather nervous about things there.

Conventional war would be damn hard getting though the DMZ with all those mines, NK is a real bone head but I think China is more interesting. China's economy is on the rise as a world trader are they going to throw that away for a tin pot back wards NK?

My impression is that what China wants is a stable sane ally in North Korea. They have the ally part soft of. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a very pro Chinese successor to the current Kim. If things got to bad I also wouldn't be surprised if the current Kim died under some what mysterious circumstances. Especially since South Korea, Japan, Russia, and the US would be more than happy with the change. North Korea could probably get bunch of help if they were serious about getting rid of their nuclear weapons and associated industry.

Kim is without doubt a "loose cannon", but this particular wing-nut has a nuke or two. This isn't a "good thing". Of course this particular hot spot has heated up and cooled down for years since the "cease fire".

I know there is no treaty of peace, but in this case I doubt that would make any difference at all to Kim.

It would not be good if this were to happen at all. I think it should be noted that although North Korea is portrayed as frail due to lack of food etc. I read a few years back something from a General in the U.S. Army on the North Koreans. He said that knowing what North Korea truly had military wise was the greatest failure of U.S. Intelligence. I'm not to surprised China didn't say anything about the sinking, i don't think Russia would have either given the same situation.

Mr. Il was just supporting Joe Biden's debate comment about Obama being tested. Quite alot of that is going around: see Israel and the Turkish ship full of terrorists in activists clothes. Torping a frigate is an act of war in most government's books. However, there are a whole lot of presighted North Korean artillery positions close to Seoul as well as a whole lot of people that will be headed south both above and below ground. The city and its people would suffer great damage before the South would rally to overcome the North. My friends in S Korea are concerned and my Israeli friend has sent his wife and family to the states for the summer.

The problem is the 2-10 k nuke factor in Korea and if Il exported his technology to Iran, Syria or god forbid Venezuela.

Avoiding war is in the South's best interest as the US currently has a very weak administration in the Whitehouse which has gone out of its way to insult our allies and embrace our enemies with its Kumbayaesque nonsense.

The North is literally on its last legs and China is probably reaming out Mr Il as we post.

There is also no better time than now for a coup in the North which is a distinct possibility.

South Korea seems to wish to downplay the possibiltiy of open warfare breaking out, even though they have asked the U.N. for some form of "punishment" for the North.

SINGAPORE (AP) -- South Korea's leader on Saturday ruled out going to war with North Korea, hours after his government asked the United Nations to punish the communist nation over the sinking of a warship.

Nope, Pete is not confusing Bush with obama-lama-ding-dong. His post is perfectly clear and concise-he clearly meant obama-lama-ding-dong.
