I don't believe so, we did (still do?) have a few grandsons of former German soldiers here, or maybe it was a son or daughter? I just don't recall any vets really, from that side of the war. I think that "Karma" is the decendent of an Imperial Japanese veteran, but I could be mis-remembering that very easily without looking it up.
The answer is simple: no . It's a shame, but honestly the last survivors don't want to bother, they probably have enough mail already and really don't need something that takes precious time away . It makes me all the more grateful to our allied Veterans who still register here and are willing to spend time with us.
I remeber in Sapper's thread a kid who claimed his grandfather was in the Wehrmacht. He got his grandfather to post on here in sappers thread once. He claimed he was shot by a Russian sniper in Berlin during the last days of the war and woke up in the hospital.
I have a relatives on the Axis side who are still alive, but it would be to hard to get them to use a computer let alone post on here.
I remember that too, I think it was Fredrich's grandfather? He only made two or three posts before leaving, Fredrich isn't around anymore too IIRC. I think there was German veteran before him as well who had passed away but I keep getting my stories mixed up. Carl says Axis veterans do visit the forums, they just don't register, hoaxes like the ones the forum were subject to a few months ago and the occasional Neo Nazi probably make their decisions easier. I can imagine some of these guys must be close to 90 years old as I know my Dad is(turned 90 May7th). Man we had a hard enough time to to change him from the dial phone to touch tone phones. So I can't imagine to many actual WWII vets typing on the keyboard.....it's sad not to many of them fellas left
Some could be in their late 70s if they were child soldiers I think? There are those who are in their early 80s as well.
Im back. There indeed were WWII German Vets on this site. I know so because they were ones I asked to at least come check out this place and to please let me know what they thought about it. Two of these Vets were Knights Cross Recipients-both now years deceased. The others included at least 4 Kriegsmarine vets and an Army vet who was a Lt in the Artillery and spent his entire war service-on the Eastern Front. None of these Gents are still living and it took the wind out of my sails with their passings in which I no longer try to get any vets here. Also, and a few of them told me the reason why they never registered or posted here (same went for any other mil his sites they might have looked at) that they didnt want themselves or their words to be worshipped-and especially by the wrong crowd. Now, at least three of them who visited said they did like the way this site was and that it would be very easy for them to participate in but-they just didnt want to be worshipped by wierdo neo nazi wannabes-and their kind. One man I asked to visit but im not clear if he ever had a chance to do so? was a man who is well-known because of a book written about his experiances in WWII and in the FFL. You can probably guess who he was by what I say here ;-))
I was talking to my Grandfather in England when I flew over last week. It was an eye opener, during our conversation at one point he said god bless Hitler I was a little struck because when was the last time you heard a vet from the war say that? He is alive and doing well I almost got him to go out with me to Duxford Air Museum during my visit. He talked about the war a lot and we had an argument about the amount of Hitler Youth at D day. There is noway that I can teach him how to register, log on and post here not happening lol, he is more interested in reading the morning paper and watching tv.
I actually know one nice guy who served two years at the SS. He is now 86 Years old. He´s really nice and not an "old Nazi". He was one of the latest to be back from Russia in late summer of 1950. Regards Ulrich
Is he good about talking about his experiences? I have found a couple great old guys that will write to me and answer my questions, but I feel like I'm bothering them. I'm sure they have better things to do, but they have been wonderful anyways.
I know I have ancestors who were in the Wehrmacht and one who was in the Leibstandarte but I do not know them personally and the ones who are alive(if they still are are around 90 now. They may not remember much. Such a shame because I have so many questions I would have liked to ask them.
No harm in trying to reach out to them, if not for their experiences at least as family? After my grandfather passed away in 2006 I always feel a great deal of pain and hopelessness when thinking about how much there was that I could have asked him about the war, the homefront, etc but didn't. Now to get even basic information about his service or that era I have to jump through various hoops, send plenty of mail, only to end up back at square one.
