I drove east last weekend and went to an antique fair. I didn't expect much, but was amazed to find this tiny amno crate which I still have to identify. The hinges are made with canvass web (Englsih or French) and the locking system with grenade pins. The pine wood makes me think of German material but the shape and design look French. It could be a WWI crate use din WWII. It could even be an ersatz made thing, but obviously very old and look but clean and dry with the exception of wodworms what was inside of it?

There were five boxes of German Wehrmacht matchboxes , still intact and complete with design of Festung Metz (Lorraine) and price in phenings still mentionned.

Hi Skipper, great find. Funny you should have this crate because, I just saw two of them in a WWII German photo showing 2-3 Lw guys loading machinegun belts with shells from crates that look exactly like this one does. Based on that alone, (and I may be wrong but?) I think its a German MG ammo crate. This pic should still be available in my favorite dealers auctions. I THINK I might also have it saved as I was thinking of bidding on that photo myself. If you still have my info? feel free to look in my "saved" catagory, as I THINK it is in there. If you dont have my info? just let me know ;-))

thanks Carl I will have a look. the size might be confusing though. the crate is not bigger than a shoe box and looks more like a rifle bullet box.

Ever since I showed you my latest Colonial Medal I fell in love with that model and found another one today: This particular one (also silver) has the clap included and was worn by a soldier who served in Indochina in the late 1930s. the clasp says "Extreme Orient" = "far east". It's in great condition.

    A good week for me!

Two binocular periscopes used by the Wehrmacht througout the war and repainted in felgrau or greyish black but both made by French factories.

    1) the black SRPI one was a model made in Puteaux near Paris between 1942 and 1944 and has some artillery graduations in the glass and adapted handlebar for easier transport.

    2) The feldgrau one was initially made by the Huet Paris bino co, but captured in 1940 with markings painted over and recycled for the Heer. It has no graduations on the glass. Both are 6 x 24 and Ifound both of them in Germany (different times and places) .

In fact they were used both by the Frenchan dthe Germans so they can fit mannequins from both nationalities. Soory for the pics that are uploaded downwards, I will try to edit them later.

I'd gladly show you round Carl. These two pieces I bought in Deutschland though. They are easier to find there than in France.

I tried them out the other day and they work perfectly!

Here's a few of the things I picked up at last weeks Militaria 2011 show.

A 1937 dated german cleaning kit which is complete with the strip down tool that is so often missing.

The KY maker code and WaA 442 was for Braunschweigische Blechwarenfabrik GmbH. The strip down tool and pull through chain are CNX marked, which was for Gustav Appel, Spandau, Berlin.

A 1939 dated british civilian gas mask in a rather unusual aluminum container. The newspaper in the bottom is a piece of wartime Daily Express!

German bakelite shell fuze cases. All are various maker marked and dated 1941 or 1942.

The base of one of the cases. Maker code JMH is for Heinrich Kopp, Inh. Theodor Simoneit, Sonneberg, Thueringen

A nice 'haul' from the Fair, John.....as we've commented before, items like the cleaning kit and gasmask canister which used to be easy to find are now getting scarce. 'MP40' looks very convincing, too......

    Thanks, Martin.

The cleaning kit took me some time to track down as I wanted one that was complete with the strip down tool. As for the gas mask, I have a number of them now and can't help myself whenever I see another.

I'm quite happy with the MP40, although not the real thing, it will suffice until I can afford the real thing.

The next decent fair is at Malvern, Worcestershire on March 20th. Depending on funds, I'm very tempted to attend that one as well.

It's just amazing the situation with MP40's - when I got mine ( 1995 ) all the dealers had piles of the things at very affordable prices. Wish I'd bought a few, not just one.......:(
