1943 OKH Training Film Close Range Tank Fighting.

    Staged, but realistically looking training film. German infantry, supported by PAK and machine-guns fights numerous Soviet T-34 and KV with mines and grenades. :)

    Excellent footage! Shows why tanks are so vulnerable without supporting infantry for protection. Of course the lack of "Russian" infantry was done for effect.

    Oh and, I guess when they say dig slit trenches-they REALLY meant slit ;-)

    On looking at this again, the Director must be related to either Lewis Milestone or John Ford in the least.

    Carl, I have seen period photos of similar German zig-zag trenches in the Roer River area, and read numerous mention of same in books. I'm guessing that the narrower the trenches were, the easier a tank could pass over them without caving them in. I'm thinking the trenches in the training film were based more on the real deal rather than dug narrow for effect.
