Just an update for those who care and/or are curious. I assisted my father in making a request to the NPRC for replacement medals for his father some months ago. They finally replied and advised what medals he was eligible to receive. They further advised to check the website to get the status of the order. The website stated that the medals were out of stock and they were waiting for them to get re-stocked. Instead of waiting around I called and spoke to a very nice lady who indicated that the average wait for replacement medals is seven months!!

So for those who have received that letter from NPRC and are waiting for the medals to be re-stocked, you can anticipate a 7 month wait from the date your request got to that department.

The silver lining is that all army medals from the Good Conduct Medal to the Medal of Honor will be engraved with the veteran's name. I was advised that only the Army did this.

So, happy waiting to those that are sitting by patiently................

If I remember correctly, it took about six months for my grandfather's replacement medals to arrive. However, I did not have the re-stock issue. I just sent in the paperwork and viola, six months later they had arrived. It is worth the wait! His Good Conduct medal was also engraved with his name on the back.

lucky you. My problem is that they missed two awards and mis-counted the campaigns on the EAME Capiagn Medal. Now I have to petition the Army Review Board to have the Military record corrected in order to then be able to order the medals from Philly......But I agree, it will be worth the wait..

The medals are not issued by NPRC. They are verified by NPRC on a computer system and then forwarded to the Department of the Army for processing. The medals themselves are shipped from a large warehouse in Philadephia run completely by the Army - NPRC has nothing to do with this part of the process. Sadly, there is a lot of confusion about this and people often think that NPRC is shipping the medals, taking seven months to do so.
