My dad, Pvt. Ivar Johnson, was a half-track driver (931) in the 10th armored Div, 54th Armored Inf Battalion. He was wounded on 8 April 1945 and captured by the Germans on 10 april. he was liberated by US forces on 23 april.

I'm trying to find any info about my dad and the events surrounding his capture. He passed away in 1988 and I've just about exhausted my research skills. I think, based on his descrption of the camp he was held in, "Big open field with very few buildings, just a big fence......Mostly Russian POWs and just a few Americans.", and my research in "Impact: the battle story of the 10th armored" by Lester Nichols, that the POW camp my dad was held in was either Stalag 7-B or 7-A.

If you have any info please respond in this forum or e-mail me at ej1970@hotmail.com

    Thanks for your help
    Regards
    Eric Johnson

    Eric,

Your father was not in Stalag VIIA. It was liberated on 29 April 1945, 6 days after your father says he was liberated. (VIIA contained thousands of American POWS.) Stalag VIIB was also liberated towards the end of the month.

Check the dates that specific POW camps were liberated that should allow you to narrow down things a bit.

    Hope this helps.

I don't know the exact liberation dates of the camps, but here is a list of the Stalags. If you have an idea of where he was wounded, I would imagine that the camp he was sent to was nearby. German Stalag Camps

I also assume you have seen this site, but I'll include it anyway. 10th Armored Division
