I need your hep on this one! I picked this up first hand from a barn with all the rust and the bugs inside . It was hidden under the straw and has been there for years and years. Under the rust I see some green and the inside is dark red. The design makes me think of a potatomasher box, but it's much small (size = about a shoe box ) . I think it's German , it looks a bit like the M-35 mine box, but that's only a guess. Or is it someting else from another nationality ? I will clean it 24h and try to find markers (if any)
possibly..German WW2 5cm Mortar Ammo Can W 36 1939 Wehrmacht... http://www.bunkermilitaria.com/Merc...Code=3686&Category_Code=GM-G&Product_Count=50 one here skip...
Skipper, i think Ray is very close. I have some sources but i need a bit of time to view all of my books. Regards Ulrich
Thanks for both of you guys! I will start the cleaning tonight after work and see if I can say the label too (it's dry and rusted but still on the box) . It seems that my instinct was right when I spotted this !
Skipper - how did you find this? Did you have permission to search the barn, was it a barn sale type event? Not saying you'd do anything illegal here, just curious how you came across the barn in the first place?
Here is the same box after careful restoration. No painting has been added and it's still 100% original. I managed to recover most of the original markings and almost all of the red inside. It confirms it is a cas efor 5 50mm mortar . Hard to believe it's the same box, isn't it?
Thanks Ulrich. From what I can read it also says "Luftdicht" (sealed) on the top What is the last word on the botton line after Werf Granat starting with a "z"?
Skipper there are two possibilities first the "Wgr.Z 34" or the "Wgr.Z 36" which means "WurfgranatenZünder" its the type of the fuze for the grenades. Both were high explosive rounds. Regards Ulrich
definitely 36 as mentionned in big on the right and "Zünder" is the word I was looking for. So the box was meant for five of these mortar fuses.
that's not going to happen to me Mark, at the last flea market I went, I left a huge U.S. box and a Zeltbahn , not to mention a complete British WWI 75mm shell (inert) . I also saw a U.S 1943 dated canteen , two British 1943 Jerry petrol cans in desert color paint . It's more a matter of space (storage) time (to restore) and money (to buy all those things) . In fact many people can't restore those relics so they don't even bother buying them because they are rusted and in this case smelled like horse sh.t. when Igot it.
No, Skipper it means that is a box for 5 Werfergranaten mit Werfergranatenzünder 36 here is the Zünder 34 but its similar to the 36 http://mitglied.multimania.de/zarthan/harrysseite/harrysseite/D.Kopfzuender/D.KopfZ.2WK/Wgr.%2034.%20Rhs..jpg and here´s the Wurfgranate36 (5cm) with measurement http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Bilder/Granatwerfer/5-cmWGr36.jpg Regards Ulrich
oh I see, I will check tomorrow if the 22cm long size would fit perfectly in the box. Thanks for your help
I found this color picture from signal, I believe it is the right box and you can clearly see the 5 cases for the mortars and the granatenwerfer used to fire them
