I am researching for a book on what women did during the war. If you have family members that worked in the factories, armories, hospitals or other areas. Let me know, I am working on a book pertaing to this subject.
My own Mom was a Wanda the Welder at the Portland OR., Kaiser shipyard building first Liberty and then Victory ships. She and her two sisters both worked there for the duration starting in late '42. She was the youngest, her two older sisters were involved in other areas than welding, one was an "expiditior" which I believe is a person who makes sure the required parts arrived on time and in place. The other was a crane operator. For other leads and ideas you might wait for Michelle ("macrusk") to get back from her surgery, her Mom was involved in the intellignece services in some capacity. In the mean time, I can turn you onto a few site links. Goto: What did you do in the war, Grandma? and: Women Come to the Front and don’t forget: Connie Field, The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter
Here is a link to a YouTube presentation which has one section devoted (smallish) to women in the service of their nation (USA). Goto: YouTube - usnationalarchives's Channel It is about half-way into the ten minute presentation.
My grandpa's sister worked on the farm while her 3 brothers were at war. I think that was probably normal even before the war, but during, she had to step it up a notch and do some of the tougher things her brothers usually took care of.
Are there any members whos family worked during the war? Possibly your mom, aunt, grandma. Let me know I am researching what women did for the war effort for a book
