Hi y'all! Bought a bunch of WWII medals at a car boot sale today. I wondered if you could all help me? Know anything about whether they're real, or their value/rarity? I know the totenkopf is silver (and has the RZM mark) and the one with the swords has a new pin (or the old one was repaired). Thanks! http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s260/TheDalekSupreme/IMG_1763.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s260/TheDalekSupreme/IMG_1762.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s260/TheDalekSupreme/IMG_1761.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s260/TheDalekSupreme/IMG_1760.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s260/TheDalekSupreme/IMG_1759.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s260/TheDalekSupreme/IMG_1758.jpg
Thanks; I was hoping for something a little more specific! I need to know whether they're genuine first.
The first is an unused Gestapo brass ID tag ( numbers were stamped in the space above the line) hard to tell if genuine from photo but plenty others out there look very similar and very different; gestapo id tag - Google Search Last one is a war merit cross with swords, which i suspect would be made from better metal if it was real, and with better detail especially on the swords. These were very rare, but take a look yourself; german war merit cross badge with swords - Google Search similar to yours sell for very little, sorry Hope this helps
Let's start with the Gestapo warrant disk...M 9/86 is a manufacturer's abbreviation of the Reichszeugmeisterei and means a company in Wuppertal-Elberfeld which exists even today.(Adam Donner, Wuppertal-Elberfeld) This company has stated that it never made warrant discs during the TR period. Many of the Gestapo fakes have the stamped code M 9/86 under the eagle. Originals never had anything stamped under the eagle. The KVK 1st Class or War Merit Cross w/ Swords is marked with a '3' which means that it was made by the firm Wilhelm Deumer. At first glance a collector may think that this is bad as it does not meet the standard Deumer hardware on the reverse...but in fact it is an uncommon mid period example. The unfortunate part is that it has been heavily cleaned or was exposed to a corrosive material at some some point. You can see traces of the corrosion left on the reverse...also there seems to be file marks on the reverse as well...this really hurts the value in my opinion. Your comments about the reverse hardware being replaced are not founded as it is original to the piece...the hardware still retains it's silver finish...this is why it look strange to you...the badge has lost all of it's finish but the hardware retains it...this is a common occurrence on non tombak badges. The Totenkopf cap insignia is a bad fake I am afraid. This one I believe is referred to as the 'zipper' fake because of it's teeth. You can see from the reverse that it was cast...very soft on the detail...you can even see where the spurious RZM logo has transposed itself on the obverse of the insignia! I see no real issues with the cap eagle other than it is missing one of it's prongs..damaged it becomes worth very little unfortunately. You may find a new collector that is on a budget to sell it to. Hope this helps... Rich
This is not accurate information I am afraid. This is a fairly common award as far as awards go. The 1st class are rarer than the 2nd class obviously but they are not very rare as was stated. The poster may be thinking of the RK des KVK M/Schwerten....these are very rare...rarer than a Knight's Cross as far as number issued. Rich
I am growing tired of all of the new people jumping on this forum asking authentication questions...they are sure fast to ask for help but seem to be lacking in the thankfulness section...if you are going to ask for some assistance...just spend a few seconds to thank someone for their time...even if you may or may not be happy about what they have reported. Rich
Well made point - if it makes you feel any better I was very grateful for the info and I'm sure there are many others too.
Nigel, That is why I am still here...you are more than welcome...and I knew you were appreciative. I was talking about all these people who google 'World war 2' and end up here to get a price on something so they can try to sell it on Craigslist. Rich
I'll second that - RRCollector's posts are fascinating ( to me, anyway - and I don't collect badges & regalia ). But these constant 'Hey-Guys-What's-It-Worth ' requests from people who contribute little or nothing else here are getting rather tiresome. ( With apologies in advance to the originator of this thread who may for all I know turn out to be a 1000+ contributor....)
