The shape of those hats reminds me of von Lettow Vorbeck, perhaps these men are South African? If that's the case, maybe there is a connection to Ossewabrandwag?
The black guy's uniform looks a lot more like a German East African (Burundi, Rwanda and Tanganyika) Bantu Askari; File:Askari.jpeg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia And the cap badge;
They are all old and fat , not SS recruits in my opinion, mostly living propaganda from nostalgic German settlers in Africa, who joined hoping they get their old colonies back. (Lüderitz ?) . They should have read Mein Kampf and would have known even Hitler didn't care much about them .
Think you're right on the money with that Skipper - a lot of the old colonists joined the nazi party thinking they could go back 'home', but obviously it didn't go that way. And definitely Von Lettow-Vorbeck's hat; (incidentally he set himself up in opposition to Hitler at one point, so it seems unusual that his veterans would support the Nazis - by all accounts they hero-worshipped Von L-V?) Great quote from Wiki; "I understand that von Lettow told Hitler to go **** himself." The nephew responded, "That's right, except that I don't think he put it that politely."
These are members of the Reichskolonialbund...they have nothing to do with the SS or any other branch of the Wehrmacht. Photos of RKB members in uniform are very rare as they were not worn all that long to begin with. I'd personally love to have these photos in my collection. Rich
