Wow! Nice stuff, Jason. I just took a look at the 25th's webpage- you gents to one hell of a job! That Hetzer looks really good- how much is original parts? Has the engine been replaced, and the obvious question, what about the gun?!
Well, first off the Gun had to be converted over to gas cause the breach was taken off. The engine to my knowledge is original and its been worked on so its up and running. About the original parts thing, everything is original except to pieces of metal that had to be welded on to cover some holes, see we found it in Europe and the country it was in (i think Switzerland) used it as target practice and there were 2 holes in it, one from a bazooka round that came in on the side right where the #s are and the second was a big hole in the floor from a land mine. if you see damage on some of the metal from bending it was because at one of the events we were at when loading the thing back on the truck it fell off and rolled onto its roof. The driver was stuck till it got put right side up. The Hetzer will be at a reenactment the 3rd weekend of September in Rockford IL if anyone is close enough this is a good reenactment with lots of cool vehicles, both allied and axis.
Nice stuff! That's a good story... Especially the rolling off the truck.. Bet that was a hectic afternoon... One thing- what do you mean by the gun being converted to gas? You'all did one hell of a job refurbishing that vehicle! That one is in FAR better condition than the Hetzer at Aberdeen Proving Grounds... Rockford Il, hmmm...
bet it was. We once had a wagon fall off a train in front of the national press. That was impressive. I'd like to hear about that gun to. Sounds interesting.
Well, A real gun would get the feds all worked up so the breach had to be cut off be4 it came here and also using real shells would endanger the crew cause if one where to fall and go off, well lets just say it would be a BIG bang! So to avoid this the tanks main gun is converted to use propane and Oxygen mixed together and lit. It makes the noise of a cannon going off if mixed right. I am not sure how it all works out but I hope they can teach me about it someday.
I've got to go in rides in that hetzer before. Its alot of fun. Too bad I wasn't around when we used to have the stug III. Now that would've been fun.
Jason, that's a crazy one (heh)! So they won't let you use a real cannon, which I can see (of course we all would agree that we SHOULD be able to use a real cannon-haha). But then, in an attempt to be "safer", they let you use some propane/oxygen mixture?!?!?! Geez, I would think big blanks would be safer than that! At least some kind of "weakened" blanks... Arrgh! I'm not the least bit ashamed to be BLAZINGLY jealous of you guys! I post a thread looking for hetzer histories (which I get good info on!), but I even get hints on OPERATIONAL hetzers! Now if one of you says your group has a refurbished Elephant, that's it. Really. Just tell me where you're at, and I'm quitting my job...
Just ask my friend William (Sarge) Vahaly--he can tell you some good stories about "things going off in tanks". He used to be a Platoon Sergent in the Army and served in Germany twice and Korea once. He was a Medical Platoon Sergeant, an Armored Platoon Sergeant and a Maintenace Platoon Sergeant in his time in the Army. He had several different specialties.
Crazy: I have got two Elephants in my garage!!! Damned... I had not realised until now that my garage shoudl be REALLY big...
Well, Friedrich, you should be careful- with two elephants in there, you're garage is going to get VERY smelly. Sorry- I guess us Americans also have a talent for bad jokes! Martin and the brits have some competition!
good one crazyD88!!!!!!!! Im sorry man but american humor is the best! Some of the british stuff is okay but most is just to different for me.
Let me guess. You are reffering to suff like Monty Python, That Goons and stuff like that. Yes, we have an odd sense of humour, but even alot of Brits don't get alot of that stuff. American humor is ok in the movies, but like the British ones, that made for a wider crowd. But from a Brit with a wicked sense of humur, alot of your stuff just ain't funny. The best American Comedians are guys like Robin Williams, Steve Martin and the like. But then these were inbspired by geniuses like JC, Spike and the rest of the comedy gods. Now, did this thread not have something to do wit AFVs [ 31 July 2002, 09:57 PM: Message edited by: Bish OBE ]
Bla, bla, bla! American humour is good, but unclassy... What does it have to do with WWII?! I won't complain. I started this...
Oh, don't get me wrong, I like all the above. Different brands of humor for different tastes. Eddie Murphy's old stand-up is really hard to top... plus the simpsons rule (Homer Simpson is really the greatest, most wise man in existence) But then again, Monty Python is GREAT... And yes, this did have something to do with AFVs. but what the hell- we're all having fun. Plus, I think we have kind of exhausted the Hetzer thing. That is, until I (hopefully) finish a some research I'm working on
