I hate those, fortunately here in Montana we have temps in the fifties in the day-time, and mid-thirties at night (some mid-twenties statewide) in Billings. Over the last twenty years our arrival of "cold" has gotten later, and the beginning of "warm" has gotten earlier. About a week on both ends since the early '90s.
It was about "Normal" here today. Mid 40's and a perfect day to be outside cutting up a few trees that had fallen in the last couple of storms. Can't go my our weather here I guess, the last 2 years have been more like they had 40-50 years ago. Ice usually 'goes out' the middle of April, it was the end of April last spring and last year we had snow on the ground the first week of November that stayed until April. Wait, this is the first week of November and they are calling for snow in a few days!! Ah crud, here we go again. Brother in law said they use to always go ice-skating on Thanksgiving when he was growing up, but it has been many years since they have been able to do that. Won't be doing that this year either.
Last night was in the 20's with wind and the real cold front is supposed to arrive tonight but there has been little moisture content so I have been sawing wood in some nearby hills of neighbor's property.....as they want dead wood cleaned up because of recent drought and nearby fires that have kept many scaired. Now that it is sawn, I will have to go and pick it up hoping the weather cooperates. Physically this is the first I have been well enough to actually gather some wood. It feels good to be able to actually do that for myself. The weather has been strange for a couple of years both in summer and winter, so we have learned to make the best of it and keep some area cleared around homes in case of the encroachment of fires in this area. Luckily I have found some redwood and some juniper that always has a pleasant smell when burned. The bulk of what I have found this year is pinion wood as a result of the bark beetle kill off of trees that happens when there is little rain. Some areas in New Mexico have been badly damaged in pine and pinon forest as a result of drought that turns the bark beetle into tree consuming monsters as they like dry trees where they flourish. Of course the hills I roam around here are haunted as I am not far from the "Bear Springs" area of Kit Carson's military activities. It can be very dry but there are a lot of pinons at my altitude of 7000 feet not far from Continental Divide as well.
Weahter here is just messed up, I still don't need any heating and I can walk around wearing a T-shirt.
Sounds like a blast from fantasy to reality, It would be so awesome if they are able to create a snow making machine. I would wish have one of those down south.
We've had a mild Winter so far but we're starting to get some snow. No minus 40 degree days!! Finished plowing the 8 to 10 inches (they were calling for 3-5) we got a few days ago and now they are predicting 4 to 8 inches today and tonight. More headed this way Tuesday.
