Apologies if these have been posted before, but I just got them in an email. They used to call this "lurid archaeology"- English Russia » Spooky Wartime Findings The Serpent's Wall
Grisly enough, but some interesting pieces. I'm not sure it's any more lurid than digging up a Roman site and finding remains, although quite a bit older.
I have read that battlefields in Russia often sit for very long time, undisturbed. A good example of this was the material wreckage left behind by Napolean's "Grand Armee", crossing the Berezina River at the village of Studiaka and it's environs. The trail left behind by the chaotic crossing was still to be seen as late as 50 YEARS after the event. A large proportion of the countryside in that aprt of the world must be very unchanging and still. No wonder the traditional Russian peasant farmer is tagged as very introspective, a patient type of personality that can wait at a train station for days on end, secure in the knowledge that the train must come, sooner or later. I have always believed that this internal "stillness" of the country has rubbed itself into the psyche of all Russians, city and country folk alike. Patient stoicism personified, ultra-conservatives in a dreamlike landscape of tranquility. No wonder many Russian don't want to leave, however bad it might be in other aspects.
Nice to see the Serpent's Wall site has been tarted up a bit. Another classic site (takes a while to load up, but smoother & worth it once in) : Northern Fortress: Nevskij*Bridge-head > Main And if you click on 'Haxodku' on the left here: «ОФИЦИАЛЬНЫЙ САЙТ САНКТ-ПЕТЕРБУРГСКОГО ИСТОРИКО-ИЗЫСКАТЕЛЬСКОГО ОБЩЕСТВА There's some more surprising/grisly stuff, particularly the FW190. (I suppose Lerensfort is also worth a listing too, even though doubtless everyone has already seen it. Some good scattered bits of 'still on the surface' Ostfront stuff there: WW2 Battlefield Relics. ) ~A
Fantastic find, some great stuff here. It's hard to believe the condition some of that stuff is in, certain objects are barely recognizable while others are in near pristine condition. I assume they give all the remains they find a proper burial?
Great find! Thanx for sharing it! BTW, that must be the biggest monocle for a German officer ever with the skull... ( Sorry could not help myself for a little black humour ).
I would think so, I've seen some cases where they'll take uniforms and other items and sell them over the internet, it's creepy! This is some pretty interesting but disturbing stuff.
