Hello, I've just joined the forum so thought it was the decent thing to say hello and introduce myself. I didn't study history at school (opted for Geography instead) and have regretted it ever since. I've spent quite a bit of my past time reading and watching about WWll. Both my Grandfathers fought; one a Navigator on board the bombers, the other a foot soldier. Having lived in Paris I am particularly interested in life in Paris under Nazi occupation. Thanks! Michelle
Hello, Michelle. Can you give us any more particulars on your grandfathers' service? Do you know what units they were in? Good luck, and hope we can help.
Hello Michelle, welcome aboard! I love geograpy as well, and find that studying WWII has greatly improved my map reading skills.
Thanks for all your welcome messages. To expand a little further on my Grandfathers histories; one flew with the SAAF 24 Squadron, he was a navigator on board Maryland and Boston bombers and fought in Africa, Sicily and Italy. With regards to my other Grandfather, unfortunately we know little of his war history as he never wanted to speak about it. We just know that he was in the British Forces and fought mostly France. Interestingly enough he was contacted in the 70s by a French family, apparently he had saved their lives and they had spent many years trying to track him down to thank him. But he declined their offer to meet and didn't want to discuss the matter with us any further. He spent his last years in a nursing home and his mental health deteriorated rapidly, though in that time he randomly mentioned spending time in the Vercours and Alsace regions.
Welcome to this great forum. If there is anything you want to know about Paris , don't hesitate to ask
Skipper, Thank you. I am grateful for any information on life in Paris during the war. I have just posted a thread under General discussions > Information Requests > Vichy Paris seeking some specific information. I would be ever so grateful for any help.
