Yes, I found the same source. Many of the EASY Company vets gather at Reading, PA every June. I have met and talked with many of them. I always wished Dick Winters would have showed up, as Reading is not that far from his home in Hershey. I would have just loved to shake his hand. He was a natural born leader. I hope his memoir becomes required reading for future infantry officers, so his legacy will live on. RIP Major Winters!

He seemed an Extraordinary, ordinary man, of which we have far too few.

You know what sticks in my mind about him? Ambrose describing his gentle nature.

There was an injured bird on his pond on Pennsylvania. Ambrose told him he'd better put it out of his misery before the foxes got it. Winters replied that he couldn't do that.

It's goofy to do so, but I always think about that passage when I watch Band of Brothers.

    Updated story from the Patriot-News:

"His life story was writ large, a hero ready-made for Hollywood who helped save the nation during its darkest hour.

"But that, Dick Winters’ friends said, was Hollywood.

"In real life, Winters, whose leadership in Easy Company, 506th regiment of the 101st Airborne Division was commemorated in the HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers,” based on the Stephen Ambrose book, shied from the spotlight.

"And when Winters died Jan. 2 at an assisted-living facility in Campbelltown, his final wish — a totally private funeral — befit a man who lived through extraordinary circumstances but never considered himself anything more than a man doing his duty, his longtime friend William S. Jackson said Sunday night."

Dick Winters, who inspired 'Band of Brothers,' remembered as an American hero | PennLive.com
