Could someone please tell me which of the US Military Services a man would have served with if he was called a Top Sergeant?
ceejay, most likely Army....term refered to the 1st Sgt...also used Top or Top Kick (think I read that one some where).....I've heard it used some in the Marines although it wasn't as widely used/accepted. Regards Clint
In the Marines a 'Top Sergeant' referes to a 'Master Sergeant' and is usually shortened to just 'Top' or Top Kick' and is reserved for the senior enlisted man in the Battalion who is not a 'First Sergeant' or Sergeant Major. It's mostly a 'B' billet promotion, meaning other than Infantry; however, the individual is in the Zone for promotion to Master Gunnery Sgt. and not First Sgt. In the Army 'Top' is a blanket term used for anyone in the 'First Sergeant Billet'.
I really doubt it...not having been around the navy alot but do know you are talkin about a rank structure that would be the equal of what they call a Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8)...in short terms commonly refered to as "Senior" or "Senior Chief".
