3rd Army, 393 Infantry, maybe the 99th something, Ft McClellan GA. My Dad was KIA in Germany near the Remegan Bridge on March 17, 1945. He was buried in the Henry Chappelle American Cemetery, in Belgium. A wonderfull person from New Hampshire is trying to gather stories for the Cemetery as many of the local Belgium residents have adopted a grave. Many people visit there and many have their family story posted as well. I am trying to get a picture of Edward Wells Allord in his uniform so that I can complete his story for all visitors to know "who he was". Does anyone know if the military routinely took pictures of the men, and if so, how can I get in touch with the right people? Thank you so much for your help. Katie Olson - daughter
Hi Mrs Olson, I'm a Belgium Soldier and I have adopted 3 graves in the Henri - Chapelle Cemetery and one in the Ardennes Cemetery . It's very important for us European people to keep alive your father memory and his buddies . Every adopter try to find pictures , story and family about these heroes , sometime it's possible and sometimes No . I'm happy that you have a contact with the adopters . I have no pictures of your father's grave but I work for that ( I have currently around 3.000 graves pictures .) . But for my next visit I will put a flower on the grave . God Bless America
I'm afraid you are really out of luck on that. The military does not regularly make or keep photos of individual soliders or sailors other than those of very high rank like generals or admirals. Field grade officers might be featured in a book or other publication that pertains to something they did or commanded. Occasionally you also find photos of individuals who received very high awards for their actions in offical publications. Outside that, you would have to have personal photos.
Does anyone know if the military routinely took pictures of the men, and if so, how can I get in touch with the right people? What about the pictures they made while in basic? Everyone was photographed in their Class A's ( I remember we only had to wear the top half) and given a copy--they also used a copy in the little training book everyone got after they finished basic. Did they do that during WWII? I doubt the photographer kept all the negatives for any length of time, but who knows?
I know I have a formal shot of my dad, it looks like just out of basic, but I don't have the original. From what I've seen around here, there does seem to have been a program of taking the pictures, but who knows what happened after that?
just a thought, you might try getting a copy of your dads records to find out which regt. he was really with, then contacting that units alumni assoc. to see if any one still listed remembers him and if they had any pictures with him in them.
Thank you - he was 393rd Inf REg, 9th Inf Div, 1st Battalion. At 3:00PM, March 17, 1945, the Remagen :Ludendorff Bridge" collapsed into the Rhine River. I have information that he was killed there. I will follow-up with your suggestion about the alumni assoc. Greatly appreciated. Katie Allord Olson - daughter of Edward Wells Allord
