just a heads up Ladies/Gentlemen get on google.com then type in toptenreviews.com note which is rated # 1 in anti-virus ware protection. have been using it since it was first introduced it will pick up those nasties and smoke them right before your eyes. malware bytes is a secondary program I hardly ever use
From what I can see there are three tied for top place and the next is downgraded a touch due "ease of use" issues. Indeed the overall rating of the top 6 is identical.
I agree, most of the mainstream anti-virus programs very similar in performance. It is more a matter of taste, than effectiveness. Malwarebytes is an excellent program when you consider it's price - FREE! It has saved many of my friends' infected systems I've had to work on
It also seems to be a good fall back if one of the others has failed. There have been a couple of times when nothing else seemed to be able to get rid of a bug and it did.
Never yet had a problem with even the free version of AVG, been using it for years. - think since it started.
I used to think that too. But it will let some stuff through. Try a deep scan with SuperAntiSpyware Free immediately after you've run an AVG scan - you might be surprised. I was. Plus the recent versions have become a bit bloated.
AVG cannot stand alone and it is wise to have at least 2 anti-viral systems on the deck. you can feel it calling : http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html
I'll give them a try - it's probably about time I was less passive about it edit - just tried bitdefender - like the speed of it - reckons I'm clean which is nice
don't feel too bad Poppy..........i got it too. wiped the drive and started from scratch, lost everything. i'm just glad i backup!
It's not a bad idea to take one of the ones you aren't using or at least aren't using frequently and scan your computer with it.
Fortuneately I don't store anything on that computer. I actually think the virus was transmitted via a Drudge Report link.
Vitesse, It is hardly the latest trick. Scareware became quite popular back in 2007-08, the easy in coding it, the fact that the large amount of computer users since then are not "Geeks", and the "paranoia" of getting a virus on your computer. Some of the scareware programs are so well done that they even fool some who are "knowledgeable" with computers. For example, my ex-gf got one in 2009, and my dad accidentally picked one up in January. To them, the scareware seemed real enough - Microsoft this and Microsoft that on the opening splash page - hey, it all looks official. I had a heck of a time trying to convince both that it was a scam. I finally had to ask them what anti-virus program they were using, and did they see that name ANYWHERE on the warning, both times the answer was no. To which I responded both times: If the warning was legit, a warning with your A-V name on would pop-up, no A-V name means the warning is bogus. After that, it was grab a "repair" CD and make a "housecall." Gotta love 24-7 tech support that makes housecalls. Unfortunately for me, that is, well, me...
Erich, I like to keep my options open, so I'll probably try it in the near-future. But, perhaps I am paranoid, but I don't think there is any one A-V program that "stands alone." Spartanroller, How did it compare speedwise to AVG? AVG takes 6-8 hours to run through my entire system, whereas Malwarebytes takes a little over 3; I'm guessing that bitdefender will probably fall somewhere in the middle.
only used the quick scan so far - just minutes if that - might try a full one later in the week - My AVG does my system fully in about 20 mins or so, so not sure what you have that's taking so long - slow machine or lots of machine?
Yeah, but the difference these days is that they're hiding them in perfectly legitimate adverts from legitimate firms that have been hijacked. A bit different from naively clicking on a dodgy link with a ".cc" on the end.
as you gents state always best to have 1-2 backup units just in case. I have malware bytes as well as AVG and bit-defender
