Hi Everyone. I'm Patrick Batty, from Cambridge, ON, Canada. I'm very happy to be here. I discovered the site through google as I was looking for information about the Battle of the Scheldt and Woensdrecht. I saw a wonderful and extensive write up a Spaniard here on wwsf.com, and I subsequently joined the site. My father, Pvt. C.R. Batty was with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders as they worked their way through Belgium and into Holland. I honestly don't know a lot about what he went through, as he, like many others never talked about it. In Woensdrecht, however, my father was seriously wounded in both the face and chest, and was subsequently awarded the Military Medal. He was hospitalized back in England, survived and served the remainder of the WW II in the UK with the Canadian Army Newspaper, "The Maple Leaf" I want to thank "Spaniard" for the great write up. And I look forward to spending a lot of time here in the coming days, months and years. Kindest Regards, Patrick Batty
Welcome from a fellow Canadian Patrick, glad to have you with us and happy you found Spaniard's good post.
Hi, Patrick. Glad to have you aboard. There are lots of interesting people (some of whom are not Canadian), as well as many informative threads. Dive in and partake.
Welcome to the forum Pat. it's nice to see a fellow Canadian on board. Looks like us Canucks are slowely taking over the forum... lol I'm not too far away from you. I'm in Windsor. Hope you enjoy it here.
Welcome to the Forum, Patrick. My Dad was in the 3LAA, and by the Scheldt was signaller with RCA 2nd Div Headquarters. I can recommend 3 books that deal with the Scheldt and will give you a sense of your father's experience, particularly as they were written by Canadians: Terrible Victory by Mark Zuehlke which is all about the First Canadian Army and the Scheldt Estuary Campaign: Sept 13 - Nov 6, 1944 Tug of War by W. Denis Whitaker who was with Royal Hamilton Light Infantry at the Scheldt The Guns of Victory by Geroge Blackburn who was with the 4th Field Regiment Artillery at the Scheldt For a military analysis, read Terry Copp`s Field of Fire and The Cinderella Army
Welcome and enjoy.!!! Attached pic of Officers of 1st battalion, The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, affiliated to The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders ( Scotland ). I have an abridged account of their Historical records and will post relevant pages.
You do not state when your Father sailed from Canada, so I will post pages covering Canadian Camerons arrival in Gourock Scotland in December 1940, to your Fathers wounding in October 1944. The Canadian Camerons saw some extremely fierce fighting during their time in Europe, and at the time of his wounding and winning the MM. at Woensdrecht, they were fighting hand to hand with German para's.
