Hi, y'all. I found this site while researching my uncle's ship from WWII, and figured I'd better join so that I can offer a bit of assistance to one of your members. I'm the daughter of a WWII vet, niece of several other WWII & Korean War vets, not to mention granddaughter of a WWI vet, Civil War vets, Revolutionary war vets... ex-wife of a Viet Nam vet, mother of a 12 year Army vet... and of course, many cousins and other assorted relatives. As you can see, the military has had a huge impact on my family. I'm interested in finding out more about their experiences. Additionally, you might be able to discern that I'm an amateur genealogist, as well. That is what led me here, after googling one of my uncles' ship. I'll find that member, and offer some muster records that I found concerning his father. I'm always willing to help others as well, so if anyone would like me to check for records for them, just leave me a message, and I'll be happy to check, since I have full access at a good genealogy site. As far as the "New Member Questions": 1. Your Name: Just call me "Redwood". It comes from the fact that I was born in "Redwood Country" on the northern coast of California. I'm also a member of a Native American tribe from the same area, and many of my ancestors have been there since time immemorial. 2. Age: 60+ My father died when I was a teenager, and he had a huge impact on my life. I think his WWII experiences, and the resulting PTSD (then just known as shell-shock), had a lot to do with the person he became, and therefore the person I became. 3. Origins: Born & Bred California! Other than that, besides Native American, I have European ancestry, particularly the British Isles. 4. Specifics: Probably the Pacific theater, Navy specifically, although sometimes my research takes me elsewhere... 5. Hobbies: Believe it or not, I AM a gamer, though not specifically WarGames... 6. Other: History in general fascinates me, because it has such an impact on who we all are today. That history which I can document that my own ancestors lived through is of particular interest to me. 7. Miscellaneous: Only that I probably should not be joining another group... I've been through that, and I truly try to limit myself in that way. I administer a family website, I belong to a trivia team @ FunTrivia.com, (which I highly recommend for mental exercise, as well as boning up on thousands of topics!) and of course, I have my genealogy research which is endless. However, no matter my misgivings, I shall try to respond to others, and we'll see how it goes.
Hello, Redwood. Welcome to this fine place. There's plenty to see and lots of friendly folk about, so pitch in where you can.
Thank you all for your fine welcome. I've been busy poking around and reading, as well as contacting that member for whom I found the muster rolls for his father! Lots of interesting information here...
