I'm working on documenting my wife's grandfather's time in the Navy during WWII. He was a seabee and I have the date he landed on Iwo (2/26/45) and the date he arrived back at San Francisco (4/29/45) but i don't have the date he left Iwo. Does anyone know approximately how long the trip took?
I would think that pretty variable. Depending on what ship he left on it may have stopped at several places first and he may have changed ships or even gone part way by air. If you have the name of the ship he was on when he got back to San Francisco it might be possible to trace it's movements and get an idea.
My ex-neighbor (now deceased) was on an LST that left Yokohama in late 1945, and took nearly a month to get to Seattle.
I read his orders wrong. He was transferred to Camp Parks on 4/29 and was at the receiving station in San Fran on 5/24. So he left Iwo around 4/29 when he was transferred.
