Hello! Just joined today. My name is Carl Eppler (kingkat) and I am well over "50". Not too far............ I have always been interested in the WW2 era. Both side of my family served in WW2. My father's brothers and my mom's brothers. Have been reading a little more about Russia, Barbarossa and Stalingrad. Phenomenal story. Hope to visit often. Thanks........
Welcome, Carl. :waving: I look forward to reading more about your family's service during WW2. That is, assuming you are inclined to share it here.
Had two of my fathers brother serve in the Army during WW2. One during Normandy. The other Occupational Forces Japan. Had three of my mother's brothers in the Navy. One a Pearl Harbor Survivor. One in the submarines and one late 1945. My late father in law served during Occupation in Japan. Would never eat rice at dinner again! Two other uncles that married into the family, both served in Philippines during WW2. One aunt by marriage was a WAVE. She is interred at Arlington. I didnot serve. Signed up in 1972 and was never called to service. Have always admired those who did serve. Thankyou.
Wow! That's a lot of WW2 service for one family. I had a great uncle that served with the 129th IR, 37th ID in the Philippines. Did your 2 uncles serve there when the US got kicked out or when we took it back in 1945?
After. I think one was at Guadicanal, not real sure. But I just remembered something of interest. This last year, I was student-teaching at a local highschool. The instructor and I were about the same age and we began to talk about ourselves and he told me his father killed himself when he was 16. As he talked, he showed me his picture, and asked if I had ever heard of "Merril's Maurauders"? I said I had seen the movie. He told me his father served with the Marauders.Even said the movie was pretty much the way it was as his father told him. Santymire was the last name. Looked it up and there his name was. Thought that was very interesting. I don't think many today realise how many Americans served during WW2. Everyone who was healthy and alive were asked to go. It mobilized the entire country. Probably why WE contributed so much. We were ALL in it.
