I'm going to paint a squad of British Commandos for a wargame. I need info on colour scheme to be used, and also about the uniform and equipment. Some color pics will be helpfull.
    Here's some questions:
    - The beret: was it used also in combat or not? Was it used or not for particular roles (e.g. sniper or heavy weapons prefers helmet instead of the beret)?
    - Did they use often the bayonet on the mk1 enfield?

The British Commandos were very proud of their barret. When they wore the beret or the helmet depended of the situation, with always a slight preference for the beret.
The same with the bayonet: when it was needed. Not putting it on the rifle made it more accurate to shoot with.
By the way, is it the N° 4 Mk I* they you mean?

Tanks RD3! I've already ordered that book, seems to be complete and fullfilled of usefull info. In my mind (maybe because of films or videogames) soldier using "heavy" weapons (such as the Bren, or Mortar) is more likely wearing an helmet, while a sniper the beret or a mimetic helmet.
I'm following the rules of the wargame i will play, so I think it is quite historically correct. My squad will be composed by 7-8 soldiers with the Lee Enfield N°4 mk1, some with bayonets and some without. Two leaders with Thompson M1, and I can play also a man with Mortar or a Sniper (with a scoped Lee Enfield N°4 mk1).

Maybe it's a good idea to have one with a Bren for more fire support.

It is unlikely that Commandos would have made much - if any - use of the derided 'pig-sticker' spike bayonet on the Mk 4 Enfield, and the 'sword' 1907 bayonet of the SMLE would have been very cumbersome.

The Commandos are, of course, famed for their use of the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife.
