Since the purpose of Thanksgiving Day is to remind us to be thankful (yes, we do need to be reminded!), I thought it would be a good idea to ask this question. This year, I am especially thankful that my search for my family's WWII history & service brought me to this forum. I have a very high regard for everyone here. And, in the words of a fairly well known fictional character:
Bilbo Rules! I am thankfull to be back. In September my foot became infected and the sawbones had to take off a toe. Now I'm back up and walking, my diabetes is under control, and I can continue to make the eyes of WW2F rouges roll as they read my posts, the half that haven't put me on the ignore list anyway
There's an "ignore" list here? LOL (edited to add) Welcome back, Belasar! First, I'd have to say I'm thankful for the friends, family, and freedoms (and, last but certainly not least, those who are out there defending those freedoms right now) that I have today. May not be where I thought I'd be at this age when I was 15, but I've got a job, a roof over my head, and food (Ramen is food, right?) on the table for the wife and kiddo every day. Secondly....I'm extremely thankful that I'm no longer in the retail world. For 10 years, my Thanksgivings were ruined by the thought that I had to deal with the worst in humanity the following morning.
Now that I've sufficiently rolled my eyes, I'm thankful that Belasars back. Mostly, I'm thankful that for the first time in years neither of my boys are deployed or in the last stages of their pre-deployment training, and this will be the first time in years that they'll both be able to be home for Christmas!!! This is also the first time in years the wifey has gone all out for the holidays. She's really into it, having spent the last two days putting up Christmas decorations. There has been a lack of enthusiasm in the last several years because of missing children.
I was thankful for many things but after reading this; "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." I'm too confused to be sure if I'm thankful for something or just grateful to still be breathing. What were we being reminded of ? In the words of Ty Webb "Thank You Very Little"!
Just got back from Thanksgiving with my wife's family (mine has forgotten I exist, which is fine with me) about an hour away over in Dallas. My step-mother-in-law had invited two of her neighbor couples over, unbeknownst to us...which really helped, we weren't sent home with ANY leftovers! Yay! Got to talking with the neighbors, found out that they were both in the Navy during WW2, one served stateside, the other was on a troop transport, made the trip from San Francisco to points west 5 times, and was there dropping troops off for the invasion of Okinawa. Got to shake their hands before they left, that really made my Thanksgiving!
This year I am thankful for two things especially. First of all, I'm very thankful to be working again. But most of all, I was very thankful that my WWII veteran grandfather was around for another Thanksgiving. His health really took a nosedive these last few months, and for a while we didn't think he would last till his 93rd birthday in October. He keeps having those mini strokes, and now he cannot walk anymore other than a few steps. But yesterday, he was talkative, and happy, and that really made my Thanksgiving special this year.
Special people make special days Darren! I'm thankful for today my Aunt invited my wife to go shopping!! I didn't have to go.
Out of salutes Darren, and I've given you all the "rep" I can so you have to settle for a "like". Glad your Grandfather had a good day!!!
I'm most thnkful for my family: my long-suffering wife; my son, his wife and kids; my daughter, and her husband and kids. I had a small stroke in June, and without their love and support, I would be lost. They've done more than I could ask. They know now because I toasted them at dinner yesterday (my daughter hosted 20 people). I'm also thankful for the Rogues here for putting up with my nonsense for almost 3 years.
Thanks to all who have served before me.......Thanks for family, friends, health, prosperity, and freedom......Humble in USA......Retired LTC US ARMY
I'm glad you're recovering from your stroke. As for putting up with you, I've always considered you one of the more gentlemanly members. (This is a very good thing)
Otto pays us lou...Its like a charity...Have to have the odd history nut and liberal..it sort of levels out the averages mate.
Well, I started this thread as I was preparing to make the 2 hour drive to visit my dear mother. I am very thankful to be given such a wonderful, loving mom. I am thankful for my late father who never forgot to Whom he owed everything, even to the very end. I am also thankful for my son, who has grown up to be a fine young man. Hopefully, his number of deployments will remain at 1. I am thankful for the freedom I enjoy because of those who fought and sacrificed. I am thankful for my family who love me and keep me humble. And I am thankful for my Faith which gives hope for the future and meaning to life.
