I can't believe that it took me so long to stumble onto this site, but better late than never. My interest in the Second World War started when I was high school, I was proud that my grandfather had answered the call when the United States decided enter the war after being bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor and having Hitler declare war on us shortly thereafter. It all started with me just wanting to find out where my grandpa went and what he did. After doing a little research I became interested in almost every aspect of the war. Ever since then I have read every book I could get my hands on about the war. I discovered that the more I learned about it the more I wanted to learn. It seems that stumbled onto the right place full of some very knowledgeable people. I gave up looking into my grandfathers war information after finding out that his records were destroyed in a fire. All I know is that he served in the Philippines. I will be digging out his patches and decorations before long though now that I found this place. I have been lurking on here for a few weeks now and cannot wait to jump into some of the conversations and learn all I can about the feats of the greatest generation. 1. Your Name: My name is Andy 2. Age: I'm 31 and have been interested in World War 2 since I was about 15 3. Origins: I'm from central Indiana 4. Specifics: I'm interested in anything to do with the Wehrmacht and am also interested in finding out where all my grandpa was and what he did. All i know is that he was an engineer in the Philippines. 5. Hobbies: I read a lot, mostly about World War 2. 6. Other: I'm also interested in other conflicts and wars, I don't know why I am so interested in this subject, I guess it's because it brings out both the best and the worst in people at the same time. I have lately started to study a little about World War 1, the Cold War, and Vietnam. 7. Miscellaneous: I work in IT as a Network Administrator.
Feel free to contribute where you can. Post pictures of the patches you have, and I'm betting that our "experts" will be of more help than you've gotten so far. BTW, welcome to the forum.
Welcome to the forum, like you it took me a long time to find a place like this, but I too find it a treasure.
G'day Andy from Indiana...(what the germans called the Americans...Indiana! All alot knew about Americans was their Westerns...they saw themsleves as the good guys - cowboys - and the enemy as the Indianas!) Why the Pugilist?
Welcome to the forums mate...Ignore Cac...He thinks he's in the Frontier Light horse again...Aussies are cowboys too..
You will learn a lot on this list. I learned more on here than I did from the National Archives. Good luck with your search!
Hi, I have recently aquired a mint condition Honolulu Star Bulletin 1st Extra news bulletin for Dec.7th, 1941. The headline states "WAR! OAHU BOMBED BY JAPANESE PLANES". Another smaller article to the top right of the page states, " SAN FRANCISCO, DEC. 7th.-President Roosevelt has announced this morning that Japanese planes had attacked Manila and Pearl Harbour. Now I know this is a pretty significant article. Could anyone help me out with an appraisal or maybe what they think it might or could be worth, I would never think of selling it, would just be neat to know. Thanks.
jbolt262, if and i stress if, its really a period printing, its only around 5 to 10 bucks. those bulletins have been reprinted several times over the past decades. if it was the full newspaper, it would be worth a touch more.
Jbolt, we are not a valuation service. Some may choose to answer, but my best advice is to take your item to a reputable dealer, after you have done considerable personal research.
It's the full newspaper and im pretty sure its from the day. I'd have to get it looked at but it does have numerous other articles and is the full length pag. i dont know if you mean by full newspaper that it has numerous pages or not.
Hi Andy, Welcome. I'm certain you will enjoy your visits here. I just want to clarify, FDR tried to get Germany to declare war, but they were otherwise engaged. It was after he cut off Japan to the point that she HAD to attack us, that he went to Congress and got permission to declare war on Germany as well.
