"Marmat" convinced me to sign up here. I was a stalwart at the old HistoryChannel WW II Messageboards since 1996, but interest had waned over the years, especially battling "Pearl Harbor Conspiracy" nuts. Cheers to my "mates" from over there who have migrated here. My "free time" is limited, despite my retirement, so I may not be very active here. [edit a week later:] I have had an interest in WW II since I discovered in the attic, at age 12 (c. 1960), my father's book on the USS Enterprise "Then There Was One". My father was an Annapolis graduate (class of '42) who was rushed into war and served on the USS Enterprise (he later headed up the Navy's Electronic Warfare Division). I read about WWII voraciously, made models, and played Avalon Hill wargames. Eventually I developed my own naval wargame of WW II and web-published a "rougue's gallery" of fictional WW II-era navy ships under the nom-de-plume of "Admiral Furashita". I now make "what-if" models of WW II-style aircraft. I have a broad general knowledge of subjects relating to WW II, but specialize in aircraft and naval subjects.
Welcome Craig, I personally will be pleased to have you contribute to this great place as often as you can. One thing I simply must ask you to do is post pics of that model you created around the real decking of your Father's ship. That was outstanding, but I didn't want to post it here without your permission and I have lost your email address somehow. Sorry 'bout that misplacement of address, don't know how it happened or where I filed it. Welcome aboard Mr. Burke, your contributions will be invaluable to all.
Good to have another helper for OpanaP, not that he needs it, as he defends against the PH conspiracists. Welcome.
Welcome Craig. I'm looking forward to your contributions. If you really want to blow a gasket, look at this thread http://www.ww2f.com/pearl-harbor-conspiracy-theories/54573-pearl-harbor-trap-catch-japanese.html. OP, Slippdigit, and others have weighed in, so your input would be a bonus.
Welcome, Craig. We're glad you decided to join the club. As for Lou's suggestion about the Pearl Harbor thread, please ignore my post there. I am an idiot.
Welcome, I recognized the name when I was scanning new posts. I must have run across you a time or two on the History Channel Boards, though I haven't visited them in the last several years. Anyway enjoy yourself.
Welcome CTB! and Luketdrifter check out the "what if modelling" thread ,some wild stuff there! But I also think some of CTB's stuff is in there somewhere...I just haven't found it yet!:headbonk:
I think we'd be happier in the long term if we referred to him as "CTB", especially considering the juxaposition of our last two posts.
Gotta re-iterate, though, my time here may be limited. I will put either pics or links to the tribute USS Enterprise I did--short answer: I used "plankowner" souvenir blocks of actual CV-6 flight-deck wood (taken from her 1958 scrapping/breakup), had them milled at great expense to thin slabs, then made the flight deck of the model CV-6 out of the flight deck of the REAL USS Enterprise. Mediocre pic here: The model depicts the afternoon of the 6th of June, 1942, when the Enterprise launched planes to find the limping heavy cruiser Mikuma and NOTHING ELSE, soon knowing that the now-defeated Japanese had left the battle scene and victory was complete. Possibly the greatest moment in US Naval aviation history, with the Navy's greatest ship (and the greatest Dad aboard). Yes, I am well aware that by Midway the wooden deck was painted gray, but I explain on the right-hand plaque about the authenticity of the wood and my desire to leave it UN-painted for display purposes. The base model is the roughly 1/500 kit from Revell, HIGHLY modified!!
