Hello, just introducing myself as a new member. I live in British Columbia, and was born in England. I am 58. Am researching my grandfather's service, both in WW1 in the 5th Battalion Norfolk Regiment, and in the Home Guard in WW2. I have a photo which is presumably of the Home Guard, but my grandfather is not in the photo, so it may possibly be another unit. Also interested in the 'Royal Edward' troopship which was torpedoed off Greece on it's way to Gallipoli. A great-uncle, along with many others, was lost. I know they are memorialized at Helles Memorial, but would be interested in stories, etc.
G'day Norfolk! Welcome aboard mate. I dont have any torpedoed Gallipoli stories sorry. But as an aside the AE2 (Australian) was the first Submarine into the Sea of Marmara...Damaged its antennae so couldnt radio its position and was thought lost. Took an Irishman (Stoker - Bram Stoker's nephew) and an Australian crew to put their hands up for the almost suicidal mission...we pi##ed it in!
Welcome to this fine forum . I hope people will be able to help you finding information about your grandfather.
Hello CAC, thanks for the welcome! That sounds like an Aussie, for sure. We lived in Tasmania for a couple of years in early 60's, then Sydney in 80's, so still have a bond with Australia.
Wow...lived in Hobart for four years also...Glenorchy (bet you're rolling your eyes...) Hey! We waz poor!
Hello, Norfolk. My Grandfather was lost on the Royal Edward. What was your Great Uncle's name? This is WW1 but I haven't enough posts to pm you. Hope other Forum members don't mind! Kath.
Thanks for letting me join. I'm in Sheffield, Yorkshire. My parents came here just before the war ended, so luckily we missed the bombing, but I remember the bomb sites. On the Moor, a main shopping street, seeing a pub , The Travellers' Rest, standing alone with great beams shoring it up. Kath.
Thanks, Otto. I couldn't get back on the Forum for a while - a bad connection message appeared. - and it's bedtime here now. Kath.
Welcome aboard, Norfolk and Kath! Here's a couple of links to get you started, dunno if there's any info there that you don't already know: RMS Royal Edward (Sunk 13/8/15) - Gallipoli Association Forum HMT Royal Edward - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (I hate sourcing from Wiki, but its good for general info and has, in the past, sparked off further areas to research) http://www.raundswarmemorials.org/4946/11526.html From Norfolk to Gallipoli Loss of the Royal Edward Gallipoli & SS Royal Edward Family History Local History
Just signing in again, thanks for all the "hellos" and links for Royal Edward, everyone has been very helpful, and I have found some information. Kath, my great-uncle's name was Alfred Edward Cann, with the RAMC. What was your grandfather's name? I was born in London, UK, by the way, and we lived there and in Berkshire before emigrating to Canada.
Norfolk, I've sent a pm. My apologies to the Forum for not replying to a member. A year ago just after I was last on I had an accident. Then my son decided to 'clean up' my pc! Do we have notification of replies? Kath.
Cheers and welcome norfolk, not sure if you are still around, but I figured I'd say hello. We do Kath. You can subscribe to a thread under "Thread Tools" at the top of the page and request how often you want to be notified of activity in a thread; immediately, daily, weekly etc. This is of course a little bit moot, as we are leaving this platform for a new one shortly. The new system will have the same functionality, but it will be implemented a tiny bit differently.
Thank you, Otto. I am still on the forum and check in now and then. Thank you Kath for your message - I have sent you a pm.
