Hey all, been a while since I've been on here. Damn the schoolwork! I found a K98 rifle that is all original stamped with S\42 and 1938 on the receiver. I know that it is legit, but I was wondering what a decent price would be for this. It has matching serial numbers in all of the right places, the stock and bore is great, has the shoulder strap, and seems like a great rifle. From what I found it is a Mauser, Obendorf- S/42 1938. I would like to know a rough price if anyone can help. The guy is asking 450euro...
He also has a M44 Mosin Nagant Sniper Rifle for 500euro which is legit, but I don't have all of the details on it.

    Any help would be great!

E 450 is an OK price ( but on the high side ) for the K98k if all is original including stock and blueing - it would need to be a VERY nice one.

I'd be very wary of the Moisin-Nagant. The Russians are inveterate fakers ( ie the numbers of 'Nazi Leicas' flooding the market.... ). Normal Moisins are worth about E 80-100 max and it would be very hard indeed to tell if it were a genuine sniper rifle.

    I'd go with the Mauser.....

I thought it was VERY hard to find matching serial numbers on K98's. Is this not true? The serial # is 2253, does that make any difference?

    Thx,

Agree with Martin on the Nagant, 500 Euros sounds very high.

All-matching K98's are difficult - but not impossible - to find. As I said, if it's as described, then it's worth the money.

Nice website FramerT, thank you! I love the schmidt rubin rifle. I have a bayonet for it also, I might have to order that one.

My "local" dealer wants to sell me a k98 for $300 - 350. Considering the prices I've seen around the net - $200 - 250 - should I tell him to pound sand?

Drache, as far as I know you cannot buy a fire-arm over the 'net',unless you are lucky enough to have an FFL liscense. If you're in good with your 'local'dealer, get him to order one and he won't mark it up too much. I'm lucky in that I have just such a dealer and he has shown me under a micro-scope what a "fake"matching numbers looks like.Hence the reason I posted that 'link'. If you don't know what to look for, you could pay big bucks for a fake.If you just want a shooter pay the cheapest price you can find. [IMG]

Ah - thanks - yeah, I don't have an FFL and it costs too much to get one. I guess I can't look a gift horse in the mouth. I'm not "in good" with my local dealer - I just moved to the area and he's a real character. I never bought a gun before, my dad and uncles own them, so he looks at me like he found me under a rock. But he's the only one in town. As far as him getting a k98, he says he can "get 'um", says he "sold a lot of 'um". Thanks for the tips, though, I'll do my best.

The one that I'm buying is a shooter also, does that make a difference in the price??

The shooter should be cheaper than a deact - more work for the gunsmith in the deact....

I see 'we' were talking 2 differant things, sorry.By 'shooter' I meant one that you were'nt concerned about being 100% correct, just something to hunt or shoot targets with.Compared to something you'd [real]hold on to as a 'collector's' piece. [IMG] nice site, Martin!

Drache has pointed out a nice link with some great sub-links. I could use a decent WW2 strap for my K-98.

Framer I consider my two Mausers one and the same, keepers and shooters. yeah they can hit the nail off a barn door at 100 paces no sweat.... :D

Air force go do a google search on mauser 98K and go through the many links, there should be several firms selling war time as well as post war K-98's

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think we are a little confused. This is an all serial number matching shooter. Never re-worked since 1938 and still shootable to this day. Are we all on the same page? I would think that a rifle that all matched was one thing, but one that was also shootable was even better, not considered more work for the gunsmith.
    Let me know

    Yes - you're right, AF4L...sorry ! [IMG]

I was talking about mismatches or average rifles. If it really does all match and is as good as you say, it's worth 'strong' money.... [IMG]
