Hello to all, found this site doing research. I have always been interested in W.W.II and the great men on all sides that fought for what they believed in. No War is good but my belief is that this was the last great war. Countries came together to fight what they thought was the good fight. That will never happen again. We will never have the dedication and devotion that people had back then, and with that dedication came ultimately victory. I know I will learn a lot here on this site, and thank all in the future that assist me in that newfound knowledge.
Welcome aboard. Are you from the East side or the West side? I was born on the East side but we moved over the mountains just before I started school and grew up there.
Good to have you aboard deerbandit, I'm also from Washington -in the rainy northwest. You'll meet some great people here. Dave
Welcome Deerbandit, Great State you're in! I visited relatives in Lynnwood, just outside Seattle while growing up. Nice walk to the Puget Sound from their house if I remember correctly.
I am from the dry side Spokane, East side for anyone not from Washington State. Lived here from 1982 -1988 while in the military here. Left because there was no work. Went back home to South Florida (hated it) worked for about 21 years and could not stand it anymore. Moved back to Spokane and have not looked back since. I am just amazed at the wealth of information on WWII on this site, it is awesome.
I always refered to them as the East and west Sides. Was born in Chewelah. I think it's now considered a suburb or Spokane but it was considered quite a trip back when I lived there. (several decades prior to your first visit to the are). The area has grown up quite a bit form what I can see (looking at Google satalite view and such). On a number of occasions I've suggested that back when I was there if you drew a line strait north and started traveling down (or is it up) it the language that they would probably speak in the next settlement you came to would be Hindi. I still like that are (except of the rattle snake problem) though I like the west side as well.
We camped out in the Olympia National Park in 72' and I remember one camping trip to Mt. Rainer in 1964. An old school chum lives in Spokane, we just reconnected a few weeks ago via my wife's facebook account ! He's a manager at one of the car dealers there. Drove through Spokane on our way home after a visit to California in 2002. Fantastic country, followed the Columbia River and cut North through some of the best looking Pine and Fir tree forests I've ever seen before passing through Spokane.
Redskins or Cowboys? It's important. ...Enjoy all that WW2F has to offer. And it's plenty. Hope to see y'all on the threads.
Welcome! I was born in Spokane, on Fairchild Air Force Base (my dad was in the army in WWII and then after a couple of years back home he joined the Air Force). Wish I could say I remember it, but I was only about 5 when we left. I fully intend to visit Washington some day, my dad always said it was one of the most beautiful places he'd ever seen.
Your Dad is not alone. Clementine, you'd fall in love with Washington. Everything is there, clean clear air, seashore, mountains, crystal clear streams, fields nestled between fantastic vistas that boggle the mind. I think that is where I got my favoritism for the mountains and camping. Still remember dipping a cup into a stream on Mt Rainier and drinking the cool water straight up. Makes Central Illinois look like, well like, um, like, flatland.
