Greetings WW2F, So I am pondering writing a series of Short Stories. I have several ideas in my head for stories, but I want to write the first short story first and progress through the series, but the trouble is getting started. This is what I have in the planning process for my first short story. An aircraft carrying members of the Devils Brigade, as well as a Top Secret weapon which, once unleashed will turn the tide of the war. In this part of the short story, the German Army is winning the war and victory looks imminent for the Germans, and the last hope rests with this device. The aircraft sustains damage and crashes and its a race against time for the survivors to fend off the incoming German assault to recover the wreckage. But what I am having a hard time thinking of, is what kind of weapon is this? I am not very imaginative in the weapons area, but a neat idea with WWII is that a lot of neat tech. was emerging, so its not farfetched for sci-fi type/high power weapons to be thought up. Look at the Manhattan Project If there is anyone out there that can help me with ideas, suggestions, or just anything to try and get my brain juices flowing, it would be highly appreciated. Thanks!!!!
You'd be better off having the 'brigade' being German. The Germans had all sorts of wacky weapons on the drawing boards, including 'death rays', sound cannons and wind cannons. If you want something less goofy, the Germans also had active night-vision and IR programs, as well as SAM missiles and ICBMs.
Thanks George!I'll think about that! What's some German transport planes that would be good for transporting a top secret cargo with some German airborne types?
The main one was the Junkers Ju52. If you want something more 'elite', go with a Fw200 Condor (these were primarily used for anti-shipping and maritime reconnaisance, but high ranking officials used them for transport). Another approach might be to replicate the fact that fuses in bombs have always had problems.....as you can guess would happen when batteries went dead in some electric types....there is also a history of problems with some of our early torpedos for WWII. At the beginning of Viet Nam many bombs would not blow up due to manufacturing faults.....our fliers risked their lives to deliver them and eventually a program was started with manufacturers overlooked by the military in the manufacturing process, which eventually improved them a great deal.
Interesting...as has been said, it would be much easier from the Germans point of view...I remember reading an excellent story about a JU88 crew being given a captured B-17 (which they were most impressed with) and tasked with delivering a nuclear device to the US...worth noteing that the author in this case didnt actually tell the reader what the "weapon" was...just that it could turn the tide of the war...(bit like the golden case in Pulp fiction - which is a re-work of much older stories). The biggest problem the allies were facing was largely from the Luftwaffe (until D-day)...so a weapon that could bring down or diffuse the Luftwaffe would be a good start...or something that could pinpoint ordinance...Early laser designators? or radio designators? Paratrooper or spy sits on the ground an illuminates the target with something the bomb can "follow". How about a 20mm gatling gun!! or early SAM...or pills that could have a delayed effect...planned to work whilst the pilots are above a certain altitude or heart rate...ive got more... : )
Thanks for the reply CAC. I was looking through the list of German aircraft they had during WWII and it seems that the Germans actually had a Flying Fortress in their inventory, seems like there could be so many possibilities with this. I'd love to hear your other ideas. I always love hearing other people's ideas.
Hey guys...I've been doing some research about German airbases during WW2, and came across an article about a German airbase in Norway, which was one of Germany's most strategically important airbases. So I think, this short story is going to take place in Norway. I also came across a couple of projects the Germans had on the drawing boards "Amerika Bombers". The more I research the more interesting ideas I have.
Amerika Bombers are a great place to start G...Especially based in Norway...skip over to Greenland...or be based there...I designed some Amerika bombers myself (stop gafawing)...Always a four engined job...plenty of wing...plenty of fuel and extra fuel...flies at top height 35k feet plus...dives to arrive at NY at 8000 feet....(5k feet daring but bombs better on target - 12k feet and your wasting your time pussy!)...Pulls away quickly and climbs like a bastard to be back over 30k feet as early as possible...always a night mission also. 3 squadrons (of four aircraft) or more attack on the same night, approaching and exiting different directions...Please please please investigate the idea of a gatling gun installed in the bomber, preferably the rear/tail gunner...as Jugghead once said " would have a devastating effect"...
*Drools* CAC I think I just soiled myself lol! Ooooooh the possibilities!!! Amerika Bombers in Norway...German Gatling gun...*drool*
OMG!!!!! I've got it!!! The top secret weapon that this aircraft is going to be carrying.........EMP device!!! Nothing will stop the Allied War Machine faster than multiple EMP detonations!!!

So good you said it twice!! Hehe...Hmmm...EM pulses would certainly effect anything electrical...but mechanical?? This is the analog era here...
GW, How about something like this: GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Expand the yield and surface area effected (through German ingenuity real or imagined). Use a Group of aircraft, each carrying one MOAB, to strike a major enemy city. Use it as a Mid-High detonation. Or ..... come up with a fuel dispersal system whereby saturating the airspace above large areas with highly flammable yet wind resistant vapors, say 10 square kilometers, and ignite with a single long range standoff missile. To really make an impression - use a Wing of bombers in one flight and cover 50-100 square kilometers! I'll go put the bottle back in the liquor cabinet now
Just found out about a group the Germans had called KG 200. This shall be who the short story is about.
