It's been awhile since I posted here but today I received by grandfather's DD214. He was a Navy Signalman 2nd Class from 1943 - 1946. What I need help with are the medal codes on his DD214 one in particular. Here is the list just as it's typed on the form. Asiatic-Pacific - 2 stars / Phillippine Lib. - 1 star / American Area / Victory Medal I need to know if the "American Area" designation refers to a medal or not. I think it's for the American Campaign service medal but I'm not sure. As always any help is appreciated.
I think you are correct. There is a medal and ribbon associated with this. The American Area is the same as the American Campaign. What is the American Area Medal awarded by the US Navy (I know it's wiki, but it does answer the question) http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/images/ribbons/RibbonAmerCamMedal.jpg
Thanks I thought that's what it meant. I'm new to having actual records to look at. My other Grandfather's army records were lost in the 1973 fire.
If I have this right the ribbon bar for the four awards you mentioned would look like this (in order of precedence):
Actually I think this is his correct ribbon set with the combat action ribbon being retroactive of course. View attachment 17421
