That is one beautiful photograph. Hard to believe the Texas, laid down in 1912, was at Normandy and even took two shore hits at Cherbourg and then made it to the Pacific tp end the war.

Photo obviously taken after women joined the navy, otherwise the ship would be parallel parked.

Sorry, Lou. I don't have that info. It appeared on Facebook in the "Texan's Post" page.

Well it looks like the Tidal Basin at DC with the Washington Monument but I assumed the ship was the USS Texas given it's three legged front tower , she was a dreadnought design. In the battle off Cherbourg she took a 240 MM hit to that elevated fire control station and another that did not explode in the bow. She sailed home to have it removed at Norfolk.

I was very wrong again....the Lexington does not look like that ship upon studying a bit more....don't know much about ships, and many other things....

Toured the Texas in 1995. My father and many other 15th AF air men had dinner aboard in Taranto harbor prior to Operation Dragoon.

Great old ship and a great photo! To bad so few today know its history.
I wish we had built the Montana class.

For all you non-Texans :) : it's the USS Texas (Served 1914 - 1945) permanently docked next to the San Jacinto Battleground Historic State Park with the San Jacinto Monument in the background near Houston, Texas!

I toured the Texas a number of times, years ago when I was stationed in San Antonio. Loved the old ship and every time I could make it over to Houston I stopped by for a visit, before I got down to the serious work of drinking and chasing women ;)
