Hello all, My name is Jim from Denver, CO. I found your forum through a Google search when trying to find information about my grandfather's involvement in WW2. Unfortunately, like so many others, his files were destroyed in the fire of 1973. All that I have is his final payment worksheet. I'm hoping to find clues to his rank, duties, unit and ultimately track his movement from US to Italy and back to US, but mostly his time in Italy. I'm looking forward to browsing this forum for ideas on where to look and who to ask. Look forward to "meeting" you all and talking with you. Jim
Welcome to the Forum Jim. It does make it difficuly to do research without records to begin with. Read through this thread, Requesting Copies of Military and Personnel Records and it will show there are several other ways to get some information. I would begin by pulling up the NARA site and ask for a replacement set of his awards and medals. They research alternate files to get their information which might show what units he was in. Another good source is a copy of his VA file. If he was wounded or has problems after he got out the VA will have his records. When the guys were discharged after the war they were told to record their separation papers in the local court house in case the original became lost or destroyed. If you know where he lived when he got out this might be a possibility. Let us know if we can help, Dave
Welcome aboard, Jim! Glad you decided to join. In addition to Dave's suggestions, I recommend starting a thread in the Military Service Record & Genealogical Research section of the Forum.
Hello Jim, and welcome. I'll second what Dave and Tommy said. By using those resources, you might be surprised at what you learn. We're here to help fill in the gaps. We have some very knowledgeable people here who might be able to help. Good luck.
Thank you all for the welcome messages and advice. I will add my grandfather's final payment sheet to Military research page.
Welcome to the forum, good luck in your search. I've found a lot here in my own search so I'm confident you'll be able to find something for your search as well.
